Tire Pressure ? and the pressure monitor system

When I picked up my MINI on Saturday, the dealer advised the tire pressure system was activated and it would take about 12 miles or so go off. If it did not, check the pressure and it would go away.

So after about 50 miles it is still on, I checked the Tire Pressure and all 4 tires were set to 42PSI!!! The manual says 33. I have the stock tires, nothing new was added. The light is still on. I did not want to reset the pressure system yet as I am not sure where the tires should be set to.

Do I set them back to 42 PSI like the dealer had or go with 33 like the manual states? What are you tires set to?

Tire Pressure ?

42 lbs. is too much, lower it.

On the drivers door jam is a sticker that lists the tires that were factory installed and pressures for those tires.

I believe its 33 for the 16 inch runflats and 35 for the 17 inch runflats.

If they are non stock-tires (non-runflats) the pressures will still be in the same ball park, 32-36, give or take a pound or two for normal driving.

I'm currently using 16 inch non-runflats at 35 front and 33 rear and 36 front and 34 rear with 17 inch runflats but that's just me, everybody has a different idea.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the info...Since the dealer is so far away for me, I just went to Costco right by work and filled them tot he specs on the Door. 33 PSI They came out took readings on all of them. Front Drivers was at 42 and drivers rear was 28. Ouch! this from the dealer too! Oh well, at least everything is up to snuff now.

After such a dramatic change in pressure and now that you know it is good you might consider resetting the TPMS.

I've never measured an increase of 30%. I've measured 10% before. But I guess if they were hot enough it could happen. The other thing is that the check pressure light was still on. That would probably mean that the reset function was not completed. As far as I know, the system could care less how much pressure is actually in the tires.

TPMS sensor reset

I know the pressure goes up after driving on tires. Especially out here in Arizona! I had to drive 2 miles to the Costco and that is about as little as I could get. So we set them all at 33 and I reset the sensor. So far so good.

Can I say that the TPMS is a royal pain in the butt.

I'd much rather check the air myself and not be reminded by an annoying buzzer.

I like it. It could save me a lot of money someday. Just imagine yourself 1/2 way through your tires tread life and you start loosing air. The sensor will go on before you can feel the difference. If you keep going you could tear up the sidewall. Minimum two tires.

I don't think it has have anything to do with the everyday car care stuff or saving money - It's more about safety.

yes, i hear you about safety w/ the TPMS. Yet, I've been driving for 21 years never w/ a TPMS on any of my cars and I've never once had a safety issue from low pressure. It's pretty easy to visually check your tires and I usually check them at the station at least once every few months. I've never had an issue. It just seems like more stuff that can fail and that we have to pay for, etc.

Guess I kind of like things simple. Not knocking you for your view

I have to disagree on this one. The TPMS can let you know about a tire inflation problem before it becomes a major issue. While it's great to check pressure frequently, that won't help if you pick up a nail while driving. The TPMS let's you know about the tire that's underinflated, and prevents any potentially serious issues due to driving on an under-inflated tire. It's an important safety device. On the MINI, the TPMS can be reset by using the on-board computer after you adjust your tire pressure, and the reset procedure looks pretty straightforward, so I don't see it being a problem.

The TPMS sensors have their advantage and I see your point, yet I guess the source of my frustration comes mainly w/ my new wheel purchase. It's kind of a pain to pay an extra $200 for a new set and to make sure they fit on the wheels I am getting, etc....

So, the value on the door jamb, is that for when the tires are "cold", or warmed up? I would assume warmed up, but ..............

Cold. Vehicle should be stationary for atleast 4 hours, and not in direct sunlight.

I always check mine cold. Here in Florida that sometimes is not always true but it's relative. When I picked up Suzie (09 S Cabrio) the TPMS light didn't go off. The dealer had to call a tech in on Saturday and found one of the Sensors was unplugged. When they plugged it in it was healed.

i believe you have to push the button on the end of your turn signal (on the left of the steering wheel). Push the button several times until you see "Set/Info" ...then hold down the button until you see "Reset" w/ the tire symbol. ...then just drive around for a minute or so the car will reset. -I may be slightly off, but that is very close to what you have to do (I too am not close to my Mini + Manual right now).

Ignition on engine off, Push and hold the TPMS reset button 4-6 seconds until the TPMS warning light(yellow) stays on, or the dash reads " set tire pressure monitors" Drive above 15mph for 10 minutes.

All done!
