Just to be clear on tire size...and tire recommendation

Just picked up some used Rota Subzero wheels and need tires. Stock tires are 205 on a 17x7 but these wheels are 17x7.5 (a half inch or 12.7 mm wider than stock).

The tire place I went to today to unmount a beat-up tire off one of the wheels was adamant that I need 215/40, but others here on NAM have said the stock tire (205/45) fits fine.

Just want to be clear that the stock tire does in fact fit fine on the slightly wider wheel...it's important to me to have an accurate speedo/odo and therefore use the stock tire size (215/40 is slightly smaller).

That said, my car has been lowered an inch...does that change the equation any (previous answers have said no, but again, just want to be clear before investing in four new tires)?

Second , any good tire recommendations? Here in Vegas we have HOT pavement, very little rain, never snows. I haven't tracked it (yet) but do drive spirited when presented the opportunity. Key factors to me are cost and durability (my argument to my wife for new wheels was that I could get them AND new rubber for less than the cost of RFs AND they would last a lot longer...).

Thoughts on tires?

Thanks!

215/45 17 is a good size to go with. a lot of people go with that size. there are more tires available in that size vs. others is my understanding.

I actually run that size and it's fine. i'm sure others will chime in.

First on speed.

There is a built in error factor in the Minis of between 2 to 3 mph.
That means the speedo displays faster mph than actual mph when running the stock tires.

Ignoring that the following applies:

Your speedo with a 215/45/17 will read 65.0 with actual 65.96 mph.

Your speedo with a 215/40/17 will read 65.0 with actual 63.69

Second on size.

If your lowered an inch with a 7.5 inch wheel, 45 offset, and a 215/45 it may rub.
It most likely won't rub with 215/40 and it will not rub with the stock size of 205/45/17.

These numbers, speed and dimensions, come from this site: http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...foTireMath.jsp

Hope this helps...

Go here: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/SearchTires.jsp to compare major brands in the size of your choice by size.

Once to that page you can select the type (summer, all season, etc.) speed and load rating and then sort by price, UTOG rating and type.

If I lived in Las Vegas I would most likely run a much higher speed rating, it should resist heat better, than the stock V rating.

Also try not to run less than the stock load rating of 84. Again think heat build up.

That should give you a good staring point to shop for what you want.

Hope this helps...

I selected 205/45E/17 and "grand touring" (daily driver, comfort is a factor) and nothing else and only got one tire. I selcted "High Performance" and got no tires. Ultra only gave me

This doesn't appear to be a very useful tool...

Go to the page again.

Do not select a category.
Check load: SL, XL
Then check speed: V,Z,W,Y,Y

You'll get at least 20, 10 if you exclude the SL load rating.

It's not perfect but it gives you an idea how to judge tires by class, speed ratings and UTOG that you can apply to all tires in your searches.

That way when shopping you have a leg up on the salesmen, you know what you need and what is suitable.

Hope this helps...

I forgot to mention that if you go to their survey results you can tell in each category the "comfort factor" of each tire.

A high performance tire can have almost as good a ride as some touring tires and it's all about what you want in the final equation.

Hope this helps...

First, 205/45-17 fits rims 6.5 to 7.5" wide so 17x7 or 17x7.5 rims are OK.

True the 215/40-17 tire fits a 7.5" wide rim but it's not required. And this size is smaller than stock so more wheel gap and some speedo error along with a rougher ride potentially.

Your best bet is keep the 205/45-17 size and go with something like-

Bridgestone potenza RE-01R $163 each which is good on comfort and handling but does wear faster with treadwear of 180.

Dunlop SP SportMaxx $129 each 240 treadwear Max Perf Summer tire

Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2 $124 each 240 treadwear UHP summer tire
General Exclaim UHP $83 each 380 treadwear UHP Summer tire (more comfort for street use, slightly less sharp on handling).
