brake and rotor question

letz see i got about 20,000 on my 2006 mcs....changed my tires 3 days ago and they said i needed to change my front brake and rotor...does this seem probable that my brake pads are already worn out? if so, itz covered by warrantee at the dealer right? thanks...

Mine lasted 22k and yes the dealer will replace them as long as the pads are 3mm or less thick.

20k is a bit low. When I did mine, it had close to 50k on the clock and I've seen the average to be 30-55k. If you drive hard, then its expected because the OE compound is pretty soft. The dealer might cover it, I don't know. The last dealer I was at (Subaru) covered brake pads. All you can do is try.

20k might be a bit low, but not out of the range expected. MINI will hook you up with some new pads and rotors. if you are nice to your dealer and tech they will replace your rear pads at 7k......i'm at 22k and i need my third set of aftermarket rotors and have gone through six sets of front pads and four sets of rears. if you stay off the track, your pads will last longer, but you won't have as much fun.

I'm dealing with brake pad issues right now and I'm trying to get them replaced before my free maintenance runs out on the MSCS next month.

What my dealership told me, they will not replace them unless one of two things happens:

1. The brake pad sensor light comes on.

2. The MINI is due for it's scheduled maintenance AND the brake pads are under 3mm.

As for your needing replaced around 20,000 miles, I would guess that you do a lot of city driving. That's very early, otherwise.

Literally, you could not PAY me to put OEM pads back on my MINI now, after having run Hawk ceramics for the last 20,000 miles. They are SOOOOO much cleaner... and work as well as stock... and they look like they have another 40,000 miles in them if I choose to keep them that long...

I'd get the dealer to install a new set of pads and rotors for free under warranty if they will... then I'd ditch the stock pads and get ceramics... it's like spending now what you'd spend in 20-30K miles on pads anyway, except then you'd have pads that will last twice as long, and don't turn your wheels black constantly...

But if you're happy with stock pads and don't care about brake dust, then I'm happy for you!

Free maintenance and parts. Once my plan is out, then I'll certainly go ceramic. I might even spring for the Hawk pads and ask MINI to put them on when they do the free service.

Go green!

Am running EBC Green Stuff to cut back wheel washing to once a week. Would cost me a fortune in rim cleaner otherwise!

Did my first pad replacement at 24k

Had to change mine at 24k. And yes, it is covered by the dealer. However, I did my own as I wanted pads that did not emit as much brakedust. The rotors are soft. I could actually feel the ridge on the outer edge of the rotors. Did not replace the rotors on this go around, but they will definitely have to be replaced next go around.....Unfortunately, I will be out of warranty by then....(I am currently at 40k and my pads are about halfway down....)Hope this helps....----------------04 EB/W MCS

I had my brakes replaced under the maintenance agreement at about 24k. I had to be really aggressive with the brakes to get them worn enough to be changed for free inside the 3 years, but it was only for the last 1000 miles or so I was on them more than normal. If they are done at the dealership, they will also swap the rotors, as they claim that MINI (gen 1 at least) rotors can't be machined.
I wore out my 2nd set of factory pads at about 45k and swapped in some nice Hawk pads and M7 rotors I got from Custom MINI Shop last AMVIV.
