Bilstein HDs or Megan Coilovers

I have been contemplating which way to go for a couple of months now. I currently have the NM springs on the stock shocks and I am trying to decide if I go with Megan's or HDs as these are the only two options in the $1k price range. I have heard both good and bad on the Megan's and have also heard the same about the HDs. I don't see myself playing with the height adjustments on the Megan's but I do like the dampening adjustment which the HDs don't have. I had Koni yellows on my R53 and loved them but they don't have anything in development for the CM. Should I go with better quality in the Bilsteins or try out the Megan's????

I would say go for the Megan's since you are my neighborhood Guinea pig when it comes to parts Seriously, has anyone been successful with Megan's on an All4?

No real opinions people? I'm a bit curious myself.

I'm curious too. I'm still leaning toward the Megans, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I plan to keep the stock height, so lowering it isn't a factor.

My reasons:
* I've used Bilstein before (not the HD's) and wasn't impressed.
* For the money, I'd rather have the option of adjusting height and damping (especially damping).
* I'm already bottoming out in the back, and the Bilsteins have internal bumpstops.
* As a strut, the Bilsteins have to provide both support and damping in the same tube. On bumpy roads, it can overheat. A coilover uses springs for support and the tube exclusively for damping, which helps reduce heat buildup.

Of course, I'm making several assumptions about a product I haven't tried. I'd like to hear from someone who has tried the HD's, even on another vehicle.

What are you talking about strut versus coilover for? The CM has coil over shocks on all four corners. There are no struts and whatever you put on there will have the same basic setup you took off: springs around the shocks.

I can tell you this: Megan is a budget rebrander of another manufacturer's product. Bilstein is an OEM themselves--you might find their shocks on a Porsche or something from the factory.

I can also tell you that 99% of people who aren't going to be driving on a track or racing or even pretending they might race will never adjust that shock valving after about two weeks. Same with ride height.

Honestly, OP I think you're wasting your time with either another "OEM" style shock or the Megans. I've got the Sport suspension and it's pretty phenomenal for a stock setup. Bear in mind I'm coming from a Miata that was set up for occasional track use. But if you must choose, I'd probably go with the Bilsteins because I like the way they ride... firm, planted, not like a caddy.

Went the HD route and have not regretted it.

Ditto to this. I came from an MKV GTI with Bilstein Sports and H&R SuperSport Springs. When my stock shocks go, I'll be getting bilsteins.

the gist on the evo forums is this: a competent spring strut setup > a cheap/low end coilover setup
