Stupid Shift . . .

This morning, sans my normal espresso fix, I did something that I promised myself that I'd never do with this car.

The throw on my shift felt a bit odd. The clutch, however, felt the same as ever.

Simultaneously, my left foot was working involuntarily (normal) while my right hand was trying to adjust to the slightly abnormal feel in the shift throw.
The result: shifting from 1st to 2nd, I slipped the clutch in before fully engaging 2nd gear. UGH!

I immediately stomped on the clutch pedal . . . there was only very brief RATATAT. Fortunately, I was not getting on it at all . . . in fact I was pulling away from a stop sign rather gingerly. (probably one reason it happened to begin with!)

So, my spotless shift history with the car has been tarnished, but all the same it has made me wonder what is ocurring when this happens. Have I customized the teeth pattern inside my gearbox?

At least you didn't accidentally downshift into second instead of fourth on the highway. ...thank god I was going under 60.

Don't worry. A missed shift or two isn't going to hurt anything unless it grinds for a while. I've had the same thing happen.

Under 60, I did it tonight at 90. I'm not sure if I'm getting lazy or if something is wrong with car, but this would be the fourt time in the past year. Full throttle in third up to redline, hard shift into fouth...err... second, then full throttle again. It only takes a second to realize and put the clutch back in, but seeing the tach bounce off the 8000 mark is scary. I always expect to see smoke from behind or feel a misfire, but so far so good. The engine is definitely not the week part of the car.

I've "kissed" the rev-limiter as well, borrowing a term that I picked up from a response to a prior post I submitted on the same mistake . . . however my error was slotting 4th instead of 6th on the way up from 5th!

Kissed it? I shoved my tounge down it's throat. The tach needle reached it's end stop.

Was anybody around to see this mis-hap?

Somehow whenever I decide it to be a good time to mulch my gears there always happens to be an on-looker marveling at the beauty that is the MINI.

"Ohh look at that awesome little car"
**GRAGTGTGATGGGTTTTATTTT!!!**
