Odd Thermostat Housing

I am new to the Forum and Mini world. Just purchased a 2012 R55 Clubman s. It has a little stumble/misfire when on first crank. Goes away in 10-20 seconds. I replaced the PCV as it was whistling, but no joy on the stumble. No codes except a misfire code. Thought I would just throw $30 at the problem and replace the coolant temp sensor. However, when I looked at the sensor I discovered I have a non original sensor???? and likely a non original housing. It is leaking coolant, I think. Coolant residue below the housing??? So I will replace it soon. The sensor is a smaller diameter than stock and angled like a base 1.6 countryman sensor.
Has anyone else seen an angled sensor on an aftermarket N18 turbo thermostat housing?????
Lastly, I was thinking of going with a metal housing and crossover pipe from ECS. Any feedback from you all on those parts?

Welcome.

This is the thermostat housing. https://www.ecstuning.com/Mini-2012-...ngine/Cooling/

Sensor is correct if its at an angle. You by pass that old elbow sensor with the updated housing and plug harness. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ntryman-s.html https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ct-sensor.html

Coolant temp sensor does not cause a stumble, its either spark, fuel, or something else. I would check plugs/coils/fuel pressure at start up.

"Lastly, I was thinking of going with a metal housing and crossover pipe from
ECS." I have these and its one and done. one of the best upgraded.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. Sort of locks it in for me to get the metal housing. I will check the issues mentioned on the stumble. However, I may have to disagree on the coolant temp sensor. As I said I am new to mini. However on many autos the coolant temp sensor is one input, of many, for the fuel trim. If it is throwing a radically wrong temp to the ecu the mixture can be lean/rich. I have owned other makes and models where an intermittent failing coolant temp sensor caused poor or stumbling idle at start up that got progressively worse as the failure went from intermittent to full on toast.
Again thanks for the reply. I am looking forward to the journey of this ownership, at least until it makes my piggy bank cry uncle.

I had a question about the water pipe from ecs tuning. Does it fit completely flush to the water pump housing or is it offset in some areas? When I put it in the water pump housing without the other side in the therm housing it fits flush, but when you put the therm housing side in, you have to turn the pipe for the notch on the therm housing to fit the notch on the pipe which offsets the pipe on the water pump housing side. I put one in today but the way the pipe has to be placed in order to fit into the thermostat side as well, looks a little iffy to me, but maybe that's just how it is seated because it's aftermarket. Just don't want to put it all back together and have it leak again.

Hello,

Should be pretty flush. But we did allow some room for some angle play to get it in.
Thanks
