Coolant Temp Sensor and Thermostat Housing

2012 MCS hatch, 64k miles

Just got Mini back from dealer for recall work. SA said tech wanted to talk to me so he took me back to the the service area (which was pretty clean BTW). Tech told me the temp sensor had a small leak and should be replaced. He showed it me, was not an active leak but was a bit crusty on top. Told me it was a minor leak that will need to be addressed at some point.

The sensor is in the radiator hose. Told me they no long make that sensor, it was moved to the thermostat housing using a different sensor. This will require replacing the thermostat housing and radiator hose. Is he correct? I suspect he is, I seem to remember reading another thread about this.

So, is this something I should just keep an eye on? I know the thermostat housing is a problem on these cars, so am tempted to just go ahead and have the work done.

On the LCIs, they did so many variations it not even funny. I have at least two or three of those! At any rate, it is true they stopped them.and they all are back in the housing assembly. This time, you have to buy an additional harness to use the new style. You can source a hose from anywhere or use a fitting to "delete" the sensor once you upgrade your thermostat.

Yes this is pretty normal repair and the new thermostat has both sensors in it.

I would also do the pipe while you have it apart

That stupid sensor leaks all the time. Several folks have fixed it permanently quite easily by gluing it in place with black RTV. This doesn't require a full coolant drain.

Do a search and you'll find details.
