Leak from coolant temp sensor on elbow 2012 countryman S

As the title states I have a leak coming from the temperature sensor on the metal elbow on my 2012 countryman S. I replaced the O ring with an autozone brand O ring that worked for a few days then the leak happened again. Do you guys know where I can find an O ring for this ? Dealer wont sell just the O ring unfortunately...

So I tried that O ring and its still leaking. I give up on this O ring search because i tried like 9 of them and NOTHING WORKED. Im forced to just succumb and replace the thermostat assembly. Im getting the housing and harness for a pretty decent price but now the next question i have is how do i eliminate this metal elbow, is there a replacement hose i need to get ? This is where my sensor is and its's what's currently leaking

It's a terrible design, no O-ring will fix it indefinitely.

We remove the sensor, clean the surfaces, and apply black RTV to it and reinstall.

Never leaks again, not to mention it's a useless sensor once you replace the thermostat, new thermostats have the temp sensor where the bleed screw was, and you're left with a potential leak point from the old sensor.

I had this problem. Dealer replaced the hoses connecting to the metal elbow and coolant temperature sensor. No more leaks

cccplus unfortunately my leak is coming from the sensor/O-ring and not the hose, i wish it was something simple like a hose leak :(

Cheapest option of repair and only takes about 20 minutes.

I thought about that but how/where do you apply the RTV exactly ? in place of the old O ring or further up on the sensor.

I'd love to try that lol

Remove the sensor from the elbow (two tangs you squeeze and it pulls out with a bit of finesse), clean the sensor and elbow of any coolant that may contaminate the seal (spray everything with brake clean), apply a bead of RTV around the existing O-ring and reinstall the sensor. Let the car sit, preferably overnight for a solid seal. Done it on multiple cars with great success.

^Well there's your problem!

The RTV fix is far cheaper than buying the whole elbow, and spills far less coolant everywhere when doing the job.

You have to have it very clean if you do the RTV thing. Good luck.

Having a couple pairs of hose pliers would keep coolant loss to a bare minimum, but once the car is off there won't be much coolant that comes out of the hole when you pull the sensor out. It will leak a bit, have a drain pan under the car.

After you have coolant clear of the seal seat just hit everything with brake clean, lay a bead around the o-ring, reinstall, live life. No scare tactics involved with the job.

Haha trust me im a pro at getting this damn sensor off and making sure coolant loss is kept to a minimum, that just shows you how many times i tried fixing this.

Snow here sucks, I had drifts that were almost 3.5 feet deep :(

Hopefully you've got a garage to do the work in, luckily for us it is 36* today and the grass is out. Midwest in late January, gotta love it.

Most people on the east coast are stuck right now, NYC, NJ some. Have you seen some of the MINIs on IG with tons of snow on them. Or buried.

What use is a garage without badass toys to park in it?!

Moving car to be worked on into the garage would be worth a thought?
