P2096 Code after header install

installed a Megan Racing header on a 2006 R53. The stock manifold broke at the weld below cat number one. Drove it for two weeks and about 500 miles, and it was great. I was going to send the ECU in to Way for a tune, but was informed that the code (Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System to Lean, yes “to” is spelled that way, not “too”) could not be eliminated. I have tuning experience on other platforms, and those check engine lights for O2 sensors and such can be eliminated. We installed the O2 spacer that was supplied with the header, and got this code. Is there a trick to eliminate that code? Maybe adding a resistor or something? Has anyone on here had experience with this? Thanks for any help!

There is a resistor drawing someplace. How long is your extender? You have a CAT?

Let me see if I can pull up the drawing.

No cat. It is a 90degreee elbow that is probably 3” long in total. It is possible that it is simply lean due to header. I just don’t want to pay for a tune and still have the issue.

Can try some #3 steel wool. Cut it into about a 1.5 square and then roll it into a ball. From everything I read the O2 sensor does not sense O2 but rather the temperature of the exhaust. Rich means heat, lean means cold. The steel wool helps insulate the tip so the ECU does not see major voltage swings.

Gloves help with the wool . . . . . .

The link below addresses a diode relative to P0420 code. I have no idea whether it will work on MINI.

If you are getting a "lean" code, perhaps the spacer is too long. The post cat O2 sensor is not "seeing" enough of the air flow. Try a shorter spacer, I think they are referred to as O2 extenders. Probably about $10 or so. If I am misreading and you are running rich, then try a longer spacer.

Jerry

Has anyone tried the way Whine not Walnuts suggested above? ....https://danstoolbox.wordpress.com/20...ectrical-hack/

Tried a shorter spacer to no avail. Gonna try the method in the previous reply.

Hello, I too have this same issue.. after installing header with no cat, had the right angled spacer. it was fine for 2000 miles.. then it started showing up, I've been clearing the codes through my Scanner.

car seems to yo yo now on idle ( just sometimes ) but i don't feel any performance drawback from it.. is this bad for my engine?

thanks
