P2096 code

I've had my SES light on for the past few months. Had it checked at my local reputable shop and they said it threw the above code and it could be one or both of my O2s. However, they were able to "recalibrate" the mixture and get the mix back to a non "lean" mixture and thus code cleared.

It has since come back on. I checked it myself with my own OBII and P2096 is present and pending. No driveability issues noticed.

What is my first step in diagnosing because I've read everything from fuel filter change, cat change out, O2s, exhaust leaks, etc. etc.?

Hmm, didn't know they were covered for that long under warranty. I guess I'll have to check that out...Thanks for the reply Healey.

Nope. 8 years or 80k miles whichever comes first. Being that I've got an 03 with 96k miles. My hopes of trotting into the dealer for a freebie have been dashed by a call to MINI "customer relations" who ran my VIN and all...

I hate just changing parts out, but with your mileage, it is really tough not to just replace both sensors. It sucks if that doesn't do it for you, but I have to think it is a good first step. (Maybe second step after checking plugs and air filter)

Thanks for the tip. Just changed cabin filter, air filter. Change out of original plugs and wires are on the horizon. I'll prolly start with O2s.

I plan on buying OEM spec cause I've read the horror stories of the others. It's as simple as spinning old ones off and new ones on right?

thought i would ask here since my topic is very similar...i have the r5/emx tool, i received it today actually...the check engine is not on, however, there difinitely is something wrong, using way too much gas (177 miles on 13gl tank) ...what happens is this...i turned the key without turning the engine on, and nothing happened on the tool...not even a light, it was as if i had never connected it...just dead...what could be happening?

Good luck, I have had this code for close to 3 or 4 years and in to the dealer as many with as many different fixes. Most recent was leaky intercooler boots.

Here are some of the things the have replaced, done
1. Reset computer
2. Reprogram computer with "modified firmware"
3. Replace plastic intake tube
4. Replace Bypass valve
5. Diagnose IC boots as "leaky"

There is a TSB on this code, and it basically states that the 02 sensor isnt the issue. I dont know if that applies to pre facelift cars like yours.
