brake pad sensor light

my light came on this week, looking to get some new pads and rotors, i seen that some of the brands don't have the sensor wire, wondering now if the sensor is reusable. My concern is the light in the center speedometer if i get a set of sticky pads will i have to just live with the sensor light being on all the time.......

thanks,

Although I'm not a fan of this, some people who regularly inspect pads/rotors, etc. will clip the sensor off and tie the ends of the wires together to bypass sensor. I'd rather spend the $20 or so and just replace it.

I don't know 1st gen cars, but usually you can find the reset brake light instructions on youtube videos for just about any modern car.

To my knowledge you cannot just reset the brake pad sensor like the flat tire warning light. You need to just zip-tie the sensor back away from things if there isn't a space for them in the pad themselves. Typically if the light goes on, the sensor is not reusable. If you cut the wires I believe that the light will remain on. They are not expensive to replace and there are two of them on your car - front left, and rear right. According to Tire Rack, my rear Hawk HPS pads do not have the grove for the brake sensor. I can tell you that after two sets the rear pads do have he grove for the sensor.

You can cut the wires, but they need to be connected to complete the circuit, that's what keeps the light off.

I’d suggest you obtain the correct brake pads (and rotors) for your car that DO have the groove for the sensor.

These are so easy and dirt cheap to replace it not even worth modifying the worn one. They even sell them on AliExpress for less than $5. Look what I found on AliExpress

Thanks fellas for all your info, all the necessary parts have been ordered. I am a little tempted to eliminate the sensor, going to try and see if i can get the light to turn off by looping the connection with a wire, if it does work i may save some money and go without the sensor. To be honest i'm actually one of those guys that checks pad wear. Thanks again for all your replies.

We use the EBC and Akebono pads in our shop and they have the groove to hold the sensors. Plus the EBC reds have been great pads for our customers.

Even if you bypass the sensors, the ECU will keep the light on until you reset it. Reset it by turning your key to the start position and then wait about 30 seconds until it clears.

No. You are wrong. Once you restore the brake pad sensor which is normally closed, the ECU will recognize it after a few moments (i.e. between 0s to 15 minutes) it will turn off the yellow warning indicator. There is nothing one needs to do to reset the ECU.

Yeah I thought that it would automatically clear. After driving about 200 miles it still did not clear. I read somewhere that turning the key on and waiting would reset it. It did.
