Pantyhose Filter for R53

Hi all,

I replaced the original airbox with a JCW airbox and made a hole in the back of it. I also decided to replace the paper cone filter with an ITG foam filter. All was good for a year or two until I decided to check on it and noticed the ITG foam filter was sticky and filthy/oily. I decided to go back to the paper filter but now I feel like the car is starved of air. It feels more sluggish.

I was thinking of wrapping the ITG filter skeleton with panty hoses instead of the nasty oily foam filter again for both better breathing and filtration. Has anyone tried this? Is this a horrible idea?

Personally I would reflect that the fragility of pantyhose is legendary. I've had very good luck with my Amsoil Nanofilter. Model EAAU3570 is a direct fit.

Get a cotton based filter, forget the panty hose..!
Just clean and reoil it as required.
Foam filters are...well, good at choking of the airflow, vs. a cotton filter as shown above (Amsoil EaAU3570). I've been present during actual dyno tests and watch the air-fuel ratio's with the stock paper, foam and cotton (K&N) on two different motorcycles. The K&N filter won by a large amount on both bikes. The foam works...ok, at lower rpm's, but QUICKLY went to hell as the rpm went above about 3500rpm.

Coming from the off road racing, there are elastic Lycra covers that are used for dusty applications. I used them on my motorcycles to cover my k&n filter for a number of years. No loss in power and at the end of the race just pull them off and some were throw away and others just rinsed off and put back on.

Amsoil makes one specifically for these as well as a water-repellent version. Never tried them myself.

I have a K&N round dry filter with the K&N Lycra cover. It has worked awesome for the past 9 years in my DDM CAI.
