i have my wife’s cooper s (2009) pulled apart to replace the valve cover and timing chain tensioner. Upon pulling the old tensioner out it appears that the one I have is shorter!!

i did notice that the updated part is shorter although I am now concerned that this probably isn’t going to stop the occasional rattle when first started. I’m sure the chain needs to be done no matter how strong the spring a 1/4 inch is a lot...

Any assistance? Is this normal?

 

Do not use the short one...return it an ask for the longer one.

There is a timing chain kit sold by rmeuropean.com for about $110 and it comes with the 82mm tensioner.

i honestly dont have time at the moment to pull it down to do the whole kit. She is currently driving my daughters car. I did the vacuum pump and upon reassembly realized that the pcv valve was bad. Her car has been down for a few weeks already.

What tensioner did I buy if there is a “longer” one? I purchased a name brand tensioner for 2009.

Name brands are not necessarily accurate. This could be an old stock they wanted to get rid off...You dont have to install the kit now. you use the tensioner and whenever you want, you can replace the kit later.

a new tensioner runs anywhere from 45 to 150 (maybe) depending on the source. this kit, gives you the chain and rails.

That's what i did on my clubman. i bought the kit, used the tensioner and after i got sometime i did the kit. took me a day to replace this kit.

 

I purchased a 11314609482 today which is supposed to be the updated, 5th revision 82mm... am I correct?

the site doesnt specify...ask the vendor for length to be on the safe side and not waste time.

 

on the topic, how do you measure the length? Overall, or under the head ? or ?

 

The 482 is the updated tensioner, we have them in stock.

Noticed the crush washer is missing from your original tensioner, make sure it's not stuck to the head when installing another tensioner that already has a crush washer.
