Can i remove my speedo w/o recoding?

I've been having issues with my speedo cluster, I'd like to take it out and clean it up and check for corrosion. I've read if it's unplugged it has to be recoded, is this the case? I'd hate to have to spend $100 on a recode, will it stop working all together if it's unplugged?

It is no problem at all. Don't know where you got the notion that it would have to be recoded. If that were the case, everything would also have to be recoded every time you disconnect and reconnect the car battery.

They are describing a procedure that includes turning on the ignition. No, I wouldn't turn on the ignition while the speedo is disconnected. It is no problem to disconnect and reconnect the speedo if you don't turn on the ignition during the process. If you want to be completely safe, disconnect the battery before you work on anything electrical.

I've pulled the speedo to change LEDs. Never turned the ignition while it was unplugged, and I haven't had any problems with it.

Cheers,
GP

I've turned it to ON (without starting the engine) with the center cluster removed and it hasn't caused any issues.
