What am I looking at? (loose cable near rear view mirror)

Hello all!

New (CPO) Mini owner here! Two weeks ago I purchased a 2012 Spice Orange Cooper S and LOVE IT so far!

I'll post more pics on the new owners thread when I can, but for now I have an issue on the inside.

I noticed a loose cable near the rear view mirror and gave it a bit of a pull. It doesn't appear to have been connected to anything, but clearly it needs to be.

I have the dimmable rear view mirror and the automatic wipers.

I suspect, due to having a Pilkington window, that the front window was replaced at some point. Is it possible that this cable was not connected properly when this happened?

Thank you in advance!

Looks like an aftermarket cable for a radar detector or bluetooth, don't recognize it. The Auto rain sensor box i can see installed behind it and has a small wire going to it.

Thank you!
It wouldn't be anything internal that was left out, would it?

Also, I'm having problems with the autosensing wipers. I have the sensitivity cranked up to the max in the settings, and it does not seem to be nearly sensitive enough.

Is there any troubleshooting I can do to check it? If this were a new windshield (and I'm assuming this due to it being the only Pilkington glass and there is no bmw logo), I read there needs to be an initialization done to the sensor?

Nope , looks like for a radar detector or something, the module for the rain sensor has a plug end like this.

If you have the sensitivity turned all the way up and it still does not work I would call the glass replacement company, it was not set correctly with the new glass or the module is not clipped in all the way. I would have them check it out.

I had Pilkington w/ auto rain senors and no problems here.

Good luck.

That type of plug is used on the Valentine V1 radar/laser detector. That's my guess, it is no MINI part that is somehow falling out.

Sweet, so I have a Valentine-one pre-wire!

Final question!

On the sensor itself- on the "business end" (glass side) which side is the rain sensor? Is it the clear lens or the purple area?

Incidentlallly, when I push against the sensor, the wipers actually activate.

Yea, that's the sensor box, and it has a cover like the link above. I would have the glass company look at it as they did the repair. The sensor needs to be right.

Is the clear eye or the purple part of the box the rain sensor?

I just bought the car CPO and the windshield had already been replaced, so I have no idea who the original glass company was, or if they would even honor any sort of warranty, given that I am a new owner.

Will probably go visit the dealer with this if I can't straighten it out on my own...

They both work together and are used in that glass, if the glass is bad or the box was not inserted correctly into the adhered section that comes with the glass, see that link up top, it will not work. The dealer can check the box and read the signal off the sensor.

This is an RJ11 (aka telephone) cable that is used to power many radar detectors, including Valentine 1 (the best).

Your previous owner had one hard wired, likely to come on with ignition, and power off with ignition off. That's how I hard wired mine.

Go and buy yourself a V1 ASAP. Way cheaper than hiring lawyers to beat speeding tickets:

HTH,
a
P.S.: I usually remove the wiring from the cars I sell not to spook my used car buyers, but your PO didn't.
