Oil filter housing bolt torque
Oil filter housing bolt torque
I am replacing the triangle gasket between the oil filter housing and block and cannot for the life of me find torque specs for the 3 bolts that hold the housing to the block. Nothing in the Bentley nor a search via Google. Anyone know for sure the specs?
Bolts 10 and 11 here: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...95&hg=11&fg=30

Look in your Bently on page 020-4 Maintenance. There's a table of tightening torque in Nm for various diameters like: M8 bolts for example. you'll need to look for the grade of the bolt marked on its head, and match it up with the table.
It says "where no specific torque is listed, the table can be used as a general guide.
Also,.. Mini Mania was selling filter housings when they changed the design I think,.. They might have a DIY write up maybe, not sure.
I found it in the Haynes manual
Oil Filter Housing-to-cylinder block 18 Ft-lbs
Edit: these are in fact the bolts, not just the filter cover to housing spec, though it's the same.

Good find and many thanks AlexQS. Hopefully the Haynes is correct as I have seen a few discrepancies over the years in Haynes and Chilton manuals.
As an aside, I found torque specs for some BMW engine oil filter housings which were between 22-36 ft/lb, so the 18 you found isn't too far off of that.

Yep,
18 ft lbs for the housing cap.

ECS, the filter cap is listed in the Bentley, it was the housing to block bolts that were in question as they are not listed.
Odly though the oil cooler to oil filter housing screws are listed...

Yep, I was just confirming what I know about the Cap. Was digging around trying to find the torque for the bolts to the block, then AlexQS found it. Good find.

Alex or 04 Indi -- do you guys have a DIY for the oil filter housing job? I bumped another thread... I haven't been able to find one and I need to do this on my R53. Can I accomplish this from the top or is this -- crawl under the car type of job. I assume I need to drain all the oil before going for it.

This might help: https://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/r50-r53-hatch-talk-2002-2006/209955-how-hard-is-a-oil-filter-housing-job.html
Looks like he did it from underneath. He needed to undo the hoses to the oil cooler too I think, and in the end he ended up flushing the coolant too, because he had spilled some in the process. ....so in addition to the filter housing, gasket, oil and filter, you might want to make sure you have some extra coolant on hand as well before you begin.
Best of luck.
The Bentley Manual I here and great for the torque and procedures on most parts. You have the torque number listed above. For the people with the manual , you will have to unhook the coolant lines. Replace or top off coolant . Oil change after replacement will also be needed. Also unlcip the oil sensor electrical clip and then those three bolts. Have rags handy as the coolant and mostly the oil will drip out down the back of the block/ I would drain out the oil from the main plug first .

ECS thank you for the reply -- always great service. I've purchased from you guys since my VAG days -- and continue to purchase from you guys in my MINI days.
Ugh..not looking forward to trying to cram my hands into the space and getting this out. Is there by chance a gasket between the oil cooler and the oil housing that you guys recommend replacing at the same time.

@ECS one more question -- from the other thread you pointed me to .. it kind of looks like I could get at both of these gaskets from the wheel well.. is that true or was that an Automatic car shown in this pic.
You are welcome.
You can, its a tight location. That's the manual trans R53. Working from the top down , helps on the top portion. Then through the wheel for the passenger side, then out the bottom back side. I would test all three locations with a ratchet and extension to reach those bolts and connections.

Same? Thank you. I will be digging into that job soon. I see that next to the big bolt at the top, it says 25.5 NM, which equals 18.81. 18 flat seems like a good stop, given the imperfections of torque wrenches.
Yes, its not much ft/lbs. But it is a little bolt.

This is an old thread, but it comes up as one of the first search results. I'm adding the torque specs for N16 and N18 engines for people looking. (I may have recently broken a bolt in my cylinder head
)
Oil filter cover to oil filter housing - 25 Nm (18.44 ft/lb)
There are 4 bolts
Oil filter housing to cylinder head - 10 Nm (7.38 ft/lb) (88.5 in/lb)
