What is this part?

I've inherited my now deceased father in law's 02 Mini Cooper S and I'm really enjoying the little car. However, the ole gal has an oil leak. I can tell that there's oil dripping from the passenger side cv axle and from the looks of it I'd say there's oil dripping onto the cv axle from this aluminum colored part directly above it. I have no idea what it is. It appears the oil isn't coming from the oil filter cap directly above it and and that it's also not coming from the oil lines connecting to this aluminum part. Could this be a port for an oil cooler? It appears there's a gasket on the back side of this part and my best guess is that is where the oil is coming from. If anyone else has seen this before please speak up. Your thoughts? Thanks in advance.

That would be your oil cooler. There is a set of gaskets between it and the filter housing and some between the filter housing and block. I would suggest replacing both while your in there.

Sorry I don't. I'm a mini tech so I just holler at my parts guy when I need something. I'm sure someone will post a link to some online parts houses. Good luck, this is an easy fix.

Is there a gasket for this part? I can't find it if so.

r1formetoo -

Here is the part diagram to help you.

Heat Exchanger #5 11427509212

This unit connects to filter housing and has two gaskets towards the filter housing. On the other side is the coolant line hoses. When this unit leaks you will get sometimes oil contamination in the coolant or sometimes a coolant leak drip near the neck of the coolant lines.

#6 The Gasket Seal x 2 The gasket in between the housing and the heat exchanger you said were leaking.

#7 Gasket For Oil Housing Part number 11427509211

This gasket is usually for leaks below the oil housing and you can see oil on the engine block. When changing out the oil filter housing unit this is also commonly replaced. To replace this gasket the oil filter housing unit has to come off.

Thanks and I hope that helps.
