The tech at my local mini service center said I had leaking PS lines. He didn't mention which. Is there an easy way to tell which is the culprit.

It's most likely to be the one that comes out of the bottom of the reservoir, and usually it's leaking at the clamp where it goes onto the power steering pump. Sometimes all you have to do is replace the clamp with a screw type clamp and it will stop it, but it's a royal PITA to do it.

 

Where would I look exactly? Just where they connect to the pump?

 

I am planning on doing at our clubs DIY day so we bring the parts, we can use the lifts and they walk us through the repair process. I just need to know which ones to order. I'll check that clamp, thanks.

 

seal both hoses underneath the reservoir and where the line connects to the pump. (1) 10-16mm and (2) 16-22mm hose clamps should suffice. done these dozens of times.

I want to clean the exterior of the lines to make sure they are not still seeping. Would a solution of simple green do the trick?

 

So how do I seal the hoses exactly? I'm not trying to be daft. I just want to make sure things are done properly.

 

When Nitro talked about sealing the hoses, he meant sealing them via the hose clamps. The hose clamps ARE the seal.

 

I had the same problem with my PS hoses. Try this first before changing the hoses.

Put rags around both hoses close to the PS fluid tank; leave enough room to get to the old clamps.

Remove the old clamps but be careful not to damage the hose. I used wire cutters and plyers.

After the old clamps are removed, install new screw type hose clamps ( any auto parts store has them )

Tighten up the new clamps but don't overtighten as to not damage the hose.

With a clean rag, wipe the hoses until they look clean and not moist.

Start up the car and see if you have any leaking fluid at these connections; once warm you can tighten the clamp just alittle more.

If no leaks appear, now look at the lower connections to see if they are moist or leaking.

If they are leaking, change the clamps as you did on the top hoses.

Last but not the least, check your fluid level.

Remember, you can only use Pentosin Power Steering Fluid CHF 11 S

I hope just new clamps corrects the problem.

 

Unstrap the old clamps from the small notches before the crimped portion. Used a long but small flathead screw driver to unhook them. The reservoir cap has a vent hole that sometimes weeps fluid. That should be normal as long as you're not leaking like you need to frequently top off.
