Tachometer warning symbol

I have a 2008 cooper s hatch, and recently I have been getting a warning indicator symbol on the tach when starting and shutting off the car. The symbol looks like cogged gear with an exclamation point in the center. I have put a code reader on the car and no fault codes are showing. If anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated.

I can't remember exactly but on automatics it has to do with the shift interlock.
Some have reported it as a failure but I have also heard it has to do with the car perhaps being on an uneven surface and the interlock not being able to engage momentarily.
It's more of a situational warning than a fault I believe.

Unfortunately I forgot to mention the car has a manual transmission,so if anyone still has any ideas it would be appreciated. Also the car seems to be running just fine with about 57000 miles. Thanks for everyones input.

+1 I know the first time I had a light out indicator, I took me a little research to figure it out. Could that be what you're seeing?

Open the pdf from the earlier post above and pages 116 -126 show the various indicators. Find the warning indicator that you see on your car.

There could be many things causing that light, you need to have someone with a MINI computer read the codes and figure out what is causing the light.

I had the exact same light come on saturday on my way to the dealer for service. I also have a manual transmission and was just driving down the interstate. According to the pdf above it seems to be all auto trans related but that can't be the case for me. I will let you know when I pick it up tomorrow what they have diagnosed it to be.

The computer scan didn't show any fault codes and when i showed the symbol to the tech in the manual he said that is an automatic only symbol. I guess maybe it was the bulb out warning in my case but I don't have any bulbs out so I don't know.

I had a loose bulb that caused mine to come on once in a while when i started the car. It took me pulling and reinserting all the bulbs to make it stop. In my case is ended up being the front drivers side City Light (parking light)
