Fan Stays on after you take the key out

Fan Stays on after you take the key out

Hey everyone,

I've done a lot of research on this site finding all the info about the faulty resistor and just ordered a new fan assembly. I have an early build with the 2 plug fan assembly. However, I think i may have a separate issue and i am afraid i just bought the fan for no reason. Can a faulty resistor cause the fan to stay on after you pull the key out of the ignition? Is this the resistor 'sticking' open, and a little tap on the resistor help the issue? Or would replacing the fan assembly only help people with the low/high speed fan issue? I think i have read too much info and am losing my mind!

you might want to check your fan to make it is running fine. But as far as i know that is normal especially when there is excessive heat. I live in PR and temperatures here are always around the 95 and when i run my car it usually stays on after i turn off the car to cool it off. You have a 19% pulley which usually creates even more heat.

does it go away after running hard? might want to check ur coolant reservoir, fixed a similar problem on mine, goodluck.

ummmm let me try to explain

The fan staying on for a bit of time is not a problem. It is not in the least bit unusual for the fan to run for as much as a minute after engine shut down. It is actually the way it SHOULD work. However if the fan runs so long as to drain the battery - HOUSTON, we have a problem.

The problem you are describing is not the resister and let me help you with that first. There is a relay on the fan assembly. It is most assuredly sticking. What I found that if it was tapped it would unstick and the fan would shut off. I found this out after a lot or effort unplugging the fan just to get it to turn off and not drain the batter. That relay is replaceable but you have to take the fan assembly out to get at it. And if your low speed is working, you may only need the relay and not the entire fan assembly. I used an 8" 3//8 extension and tapped the relay. It is in a black housing on the left side (looking at it) of the assembly straight down past the radiator hose. A simple tap should do it.`

But you say you have a 2003. The resister is probably gone too. Does the fan go on low speed when you turn on the A/C? You have to look at it as it does not make enough noise to hear, unlike when the high speed kicks in. If the low is gone then an assembly is required.

Thank you very much for your response. I had disconnected the fuse from the fan to stop it from running and when reattaching it last night, the fan didn't turn straight on. However, when i turned the car on and ran the a/c at full power, the fan didn't turn on slow, only on high for a few seconds,then would shut down and then restart about 10 seconds later.

So it seems that the fan assembly needs to be replaced and I did the right thing by ordering a new fan assembly. I had read the entire thread on the fan assembly and was overloaded with info! Any tips on pulling the front of the car apart to remove the fan?

Good instructions for getting into service mode are here.

The fan is then easy to get out. You do not have to empty the antifreeze.
