Whats the deal with Inspection II?
Im just about to the 45K mark, and its warning me to go in soon
From looking over the usual items BESIDES CHECKING EVERYTHING (mostly visually), It comes down to air filters and brake fluid change (every 2 years).
I dont really care about the air filters / oil / brakes, and I can definately take care of a brake bleed on my own. Same with fuel filter, and coolant (though I didnt see it in the text or when to replace)
It also mentions they check for rust, and if I dont go in I surely do not want to jeopardize my rust warranty in any way.
So question is, should I take 'er in just so they can visually look at it!?.. Am i going to have to pay if they dont replace anything??
I guess I'll call regardless, but sometimes the MA's dont really know, so i'm looking for input, and mainly experience... I know a few are there / past 45K.
Thanks

yes - you are correct - they are going to charge you a zillion dollars to visually inspect your car.
I let them do the pre-pay maint' then do my own oil changes and brakes and fluids 'til around 100,000 miles then sell the beast. If you find a warranty issue that is a different gremlin and I'd run to the dealer ... but on my 02 and up to now on the 7 .. Had some issues I TRIED to get them to cover but Noooooo.
I just ran out of pre-pay maint on the 7 while the service counter says I have 1200 miles to go for service one. Ya, like I'll take it in for that! (I'm a low mile driver now . . . ain't early retirement great?) I know how to reset the counter . . .

The serpentine belt is a 10 minute job at most(pull the headlight, bridge and liner and your good to go). Call me OC but when inspection II popped up at around 45k I replaced the belt, oil, fuel filter, coolant, plugs, bled the brakes and seafoamed followed by a compression check. I'm now at 115k with not so much as a hiccup from this motor and that's with a PnP head and tune on an N12

Good to hear. Id definately like to do all the above.
Did you use MINI fluids (brake/coolant), belt, plugs, and fuel filter??
Im sure there are better (at least brake) fluids out there.

Personally, I would use all MINI (BMW) products for the fluids (especially the coolant, but I don't think you are due for that yet), brake fluid ATE, Oil there is a lot of debate but your safest choice is MINI oil (not really more expenisve), runner up Mobile1 0W-40 (European Formula). For filters and such, you can find the part numbers on RealOEM.com and order the parts from a bunch of online sellers of BMW Group parts, my recent favorite is parts.com as they seem to have the cheapest prices. You can get the oil filter kits and all the filters, and any other part.

with a fuel filter, oil filter, 4 plugs, a belt and some new blades im up to about 150 bucks... beats the dealer any day

It sure does! The dealer wanted to charge $200 to replace the microfilter for a BMW 6 series!!! So I just got the parts (needed two of them), for $60. I just did the water pump & thermostat on my Z3, saved a fortune by getting the BMW parts ($70 and $50) and doing it myself (with the help of forums and the shop manual).
Hears what I have gleaned for a maintenance schedule and dealer charges (or incentives to do it yourself) in the Seattle area:
Oil Change 1 Year or CBS
Micro-Filter 2 years
Brake Fluid 2 Years or CBS
Air Filter 2 Years or every 2nd oil change or CBS
Tires 6 Years
Spark Plugs 60K
Transmission Service 100K
Oxygen Sensor 120K
Coolant "..long term rating as does not need to be changed except for system repairs".
V-Belt N/S
Fuel Filter N/S
Power Steering Fluid N/S
1) Oil Change ($95)
2) Micro Filter ($90)
3) Transmission Service ($300)
4) Brake Fluid ($90)
5) Coolant ($150)
6) Air Filter ($80)
7) V-Belt ($180)

Lifted from a BMW forum post: 1. Switch the ignition on (so that the battery, Oil and Parking brake lights are displayed) and the key is ready to start the engine - but don't actually start the car. 2. Press the odometer reset button for between 5 and 10 seconds until a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the centre appears in the top window between the clocks (where the outside temperature / time or date normally appears) - this is the "Service" icon. 3. Release the odometer button briefly and press again straight away which brings up a picture of the Brake Fluid symbol (same as the one that the i-drive shows when you look at the Service menu). 4. If you want to reset the Brake Fluid interval for another 2 years then keep holding the odometer button until the word "RESET?" appears at the bottom of the lower window. 5. Release the button briefly and push it in again and hold for about 5 - 10 seconds until the new date appears in the bottom window. You can then switch the ignition off and the new Brake Fluid date will appear in the service menu on the i-drive screen next time you switch on. 6. If you want to reset the Oil, Microfilter or Brake Pad indicators then you will need to follow the same sequence as steps 1 and 2 above, but when you get to step 3 and the brake Fluid icon appears, just release the button and press again and the next service item will appear. 7. You can continue releasing and pressing the button until the required service item icon appears for the one you want to reset. As soon as it does then hold in the button in until the word "RESET?" appears again as in step 4 above. Once the word "RESET?" has appeared, you need to release the button briefly and hold it in again for about 5 - 10 seconds until it is replaced by the new service interval figure (as per step 5 above). Hints & Tips Before actually resetting anything, go through steps 1, 2 and 6 above until you are familiar (and sure) what you want to reset. Practice this a few times and note down in what order the icons appear after the initial "Service" icon appears. If you do happen to hold the button down too long against an item you don't want to reset and the "RESET?" appears, just leave the button alone for 10 seconds or so and it will not let you reset the item. (Alternatively just switch the ignition off and start again).
