Dashboard Rattle

I have a nearly brand new 2009 MCS with a dashboard rattle. Usually at around 2,500 to 3,500 RPM's. Any thoughts on the issue? Has anyone had luck with dealers tracking these down and fixing them?

If it happens fairly reliably (/reproducibly) at 2,500-3,500 RPM, the dealer should have no qualms fixing it under warranty.

The tricky part is getting sounds that aren't easy to reproduce, fixed.

I had one too. Sounded like it was behind the speedometer, but hard to locate. Turns out it was the panel that's next to your right foot that covers the heater core. I removed the panel and installed some high-density foam near its rear tab that keeps the panel engaged and quiet.

I've heard that before. I try pressing on it with my foot, but no-go. How did you figure this out?

I thought MINI addressed the rattles that were so common in the first generation when they redesigned for the second generation.

I have had 4 dash rattles, all of which have been fixed (for now) by the dealer. It can be tricky to reproduce sometimes, but give it a shot. I had one at the tach, one by the driver's vent, one by the speedo and the secret compartment lid. The lid and tach were replaced and the dash taken apart and put back together with some felt tape between the problematic areas. All's good except now my sunroof is rattling after having been adjusted...

I had almost the exact same symptoms, it was easy to duplicate for the dealer, so I left it with them, and they fixed it - but no one can tell me what it was......but I haven't heard a peep out of it or any others since then.

I have a dashboard rattle too. Well, it's more like a clicking sound. I hear it when I go over small bumps. It sounds like it's coming from either behind the speedo or maybe behind the glove box. My Gen 1 had it and now my 2007 Gen 2 has it. Does anyone else have this issue?

I notice that I have a buzzing sound between 2k and 3k, but only if its kinda hot and humid outside. Is there a TSB for that?

So odd...I have the same "buzzing" sound, I believe coming from behind the speedo between 2000-3000 rpm. Seems to occur at these rpms when I press the gas pedal to accelerate. It has begun to irritate me but I am dreading taking it to the dealer and having to replicate it.....though now is probably the time to do this under warranty!

That's exactly what mine did too. I found putting it under load by holding the brake while I gave it a little gas (mine's an automatic) made the sound easy to duplicate. It still took them a day or two to fix it, but it may have been the first one they encountered, since this was about this time last year.

Great idea...I am going to try and see if it works! Mine is an auto too so I wonder if that makes the problem worse. Oh well...at least my MINI isnt alone in being possessed

Exactly. Mine is a manual, but its the same thing. Its only a 2k-3k thing, no matter what gear or what speed. Of course, the car revs at 3k all day long when on highway stretches. I am breaking down and taking it to the dealer. Its got 1300 miles on it :( Depressed.

I go to the largest MINI dealer in the country, and when I call them, they act like no MINI's have rattles. WTF!

You have to step back and see the "innovation" put into the new Mini (compared to classic Mini). Mini had gone through tremendous lean design to give itself the new look and feel. Bottom line was to save more $$$ for Mini to produce the car, and occasionally more headache to you as car owner. In a nut shell, its interior has more injection molded plastic parts and less fasteners. For those who live in areas with high temp fluctuation, might experience it worst. Why? thermal expansion on top of engineernig tolerance. For those who have experience/knowledge with engineering plastic and design can probably appreciate what I am getting to. Bottom line is no real permanent fix; dealers just do what it takes to get you off their backs on the inevitable issue with the design choices.
