Dual mass flywheel
Dual mass flywheel
A question .. I understand the function of a flywheel, but I have no clue what a dual mass flywheel consists of.. dual means two ..does that mean the flywheel is composed of two different metals ? Why not use a standard 'run of the mill' type ? Why replace flywheels unless the teeth are broken or it's warped?
I'm still trying to learn as much as I can !!!

Because DM flywheels cannot be machine-surfaced or "trued," they must be replaced, about $800 for the part.
Do yr Google research and y'll see why.

Thanks !! It makes sense now. "Alice" has a little chatter while in neutral with the clutch out. Once the pedal is 1/2 way engaged, the rattle is gone...tranny feels fine .. This is a great forum.I'm comfortable turning wrenches on muscle cars etc, but the Mini is a different breed of animal ( family bought my 04S as a christmas present to me.. I feel lucky that the one they chose hasn't been driven hard or raced ..60K with 2 premium packages )
Both my S's with stock flywheels have had that chatter.
I think its just the nature of the beast.

Here's a good video on the dual mass flywheel: http://www.zf.com/multimedia/zmsFunk...nglisch_V3.wmv
It's got a lot of moving parts so you can see why it might start chattering...

Outstanding vid !! Mine can chatter all it wants . If it says K M A ..then I'll get concerned !! Also ... do you guys find people in other mini's wave ? It happens all the time in my C-4 but maybe some Mini owners are a bit shy ? I wave .
My 07 MCS had its DMF replaced because it was making a knocking sound. Shortly after that I decided I couldn't take Honolulu's traffic with a stick anymore and got an 08 automatic.
Honolulu is full of Minis and usually the only place I get waves are while driving on Hickam AFB. The rest of Honolulu people seem to have blinders on, they're afraid to look at you or your Mini.

Everyday I see no less than 50 MINIs, including classics.
Getting the flywheel and clutch replaced next week. I had to take the tech in the car with me to "show" them the problem. Apparently there is a service bulletin, but it depends on when the car was made. Hopefully this will take care of that issue.
flywheel and clutch replaced
hey, I brought my 2005 cooper S for service at around 18,500 miles because I heard a chattering noise when the clutch was released and the car in neutral. I was told everything was fine with the car. The noise has significantly gotten louder so I brought the car in at 60,000 miles. I have now been told the flywheel and clutch need to be replaced. since it is out of warranty, I'm currently trying to get mini to pay for the repair. Were you getting the same chatter? Also, if you let the clutch out slowly into neutral there is usually no chatter.

According to realoem.com (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref.do?part=11227561765) it shows all non-S R55/R56/R57 models as having a "twin mass flywheel". So it looks like your source may have been incorrect.
