Don't lose your Comfort Access Key Battery Cover

The battery cover on the back of my comfort access key or key fob is lost (2007 coupe - my wife's car). I called Parts and they said that they don't sell these covers and that the key is $249. I called Service and they said it might be covered under warranty. They asked if the key was damaged - it's not, it's in perfect condition. Service said to mail them the key (I don't live close to the dealer) along with a copy of my registration and driver's license. They said they should have an answer within a few days.

When i get home tonight I'm going to duct tape the battery cover on my wife's key!!!!

My MA warned me about this when I took delivery.
Seems stupid since you can order the chrome ring as a separate part.

I purchased a complete key fob from the internet for less than $50.00.

Burberryed-
Where did you find it? I've searched ebay and google, but I can only find fobs and keys for older Minis.

The chrome ring already broken on mine, but I just opted to crazy glue it together as the keys do not come out of my pocket except at the end of the day.

If the cover was lost because it just fell off it was obviously a defective design, and I would insist the dealer cover a replacement under warranty. The covers that house small batteries on many personal electronics don't just fall off, they usually have to be pried open, and that takes some effort. If your dealer balks, complain through MINI USA.

I purchased the key fob from Remotehub(sales@remotehub.info) part #160215382222 for $47.45 plus $12.97 S&H. Hope this helps.

Good news

Thanks for the replies!

The dealer called to let me know that it will be covered by the warranty and that I'll get a new key in the mail.

That's good news! Let's hope MINI is ordering lots of spare battery covers!

Update- The new key doesn't work the comfort features. That is, I can't walk up to the car and push the black button on the door handle and open it, and I have to put the key in the dash to start the car. Also, it won't open the trunk with the remote control.

The dealer says that I will have to bring it in for programming, which will take one to two hours. They didn't know about this when they mailed it to me. I don't live close to the dealer, so that will have to wait a while.

If I had to do it all over, I would have asked for them to just send me the battery and cover and kept my old key.
