Tire Pressure Monitor

Uhg, Okay so my yellow indicator light is coming for (what seems to be) no reason at all. about a month ago I had to have a tire repaired because it was leaking, (super cold weather will do that) so anyway, a about a week ago the monitor light has been coming on and taking like 3-6 minutes to go out. I'll fill all the tires up to about 40psi and a day later the light will come on... I'll get out and check the pressure and it will be fine...not low at all...

Whats the deal?

I'll also press the reset button under the park brake. Doesn't seem to do anything...

Is that a second-generation car, or first? On my R56, I use the nav screen to reset the monitor. Even without the nav system, I wasn't aware that second-generation cars have the button by the parking brake.

Yea, they definitely don't. I have a R56 without nav and the TPMS system is still reset via OBC.

Oh, I was un aware that it was a generation specific thread. All I know is that it's a 2004 Mini cooper S with a TPMS and the button under the parkbrake. Sorry guys

No need to apologize. If you go to the forum index, you will find a stock problems folder for first-generation cars. I would suggest reposting your question there and likely someone will be able to provide you with an answer. Good luck.

Is the TPMS standard on R56's?

On the late 07's and 08's it is. I have it on my 07 that I received in september. It has gone off once when nothing seemed to be off. It reset itself after a bit.

Annoying that they don't display the tire pressures.

For the first gen, the reset of the TPMS is done while the engine is running by pressing the button by the handbrake and holding it until the light stops blinking (holding it 10 to 30 seconds...I've had different durations at differend times). Once it stops blinking it will go solid on... lift off the button and wait until the light goes out... maybe another 30 seconds, then it's done.
I just had to do it again last night. It tripped when I hit a frost heave in a bridge, but a quick check of the tire pressure showed no change from last weekends reading, so it was a false. i get that about once every 6 months.

I think tire shops are pretty much on board now.
I installed some new ones and found some info from Beru, posted here:

My 07 was from March, so is there a way to check if it has a TPMS? It shows up in the computer to reset it, but that could just be there incase the car has it. One software package for all cars.

Don't forget to go for a short drive. The monitoring system in the 1st gen models (and maybe 2nd?) uses the tire rotation speed to judge whether or not there is pressure loss. It needs a short drive to establish a base line for each tire. Should be done everytime wheels/tires are changed, rotated, aired-up or whatever.

All 2nd gen MINIs have TPMS, that measure tire pressure.
1st gen MINIs do not have a true tire pressure measuring system. The 1st gen cars tire indicator works off the ABS, by measuring wheel rotation speed. If one wheel starts to rotate faster (because it is smaller do to loss of air pressure) the system signals a problem.

I wouldn't be too positive that all R56's have the TPMS sensors. I'm thinking there's a build date involved.

You could be right, just all the ones I've seen had the new system.

Thanks, Mark. I'm pretty much living (happily) in the past with my '02 and I don't pay much attention to anything that dosen't affect Farley.

Apparently rubber stems = indirect TPMS (wheel rotational speed) and metal stems = direct TPMS (sensors)

I bought my 2007 R56 in January...and when I press the OBC button, nothing shows up AT ALL about the TPMS...

On the window sticker it says the car has the TPMS, but it also says it has 17" wheels, and that was switched around at the dealership somehow...it has 16"

So could this mean I do not have TPMS? I kinda hope I dont since I am shopping for new wheels...lol

( i found this thread through a search sorry for posting this on a 1st gen thread )
