Lately when I open my sunroof it sqeaks and squeals when it retracts and closes. Sounds like metal on metal.... Any suggestions for a do it yourself fix? Will spraying some WD40 on the joints/tracks work?

Let's see, there's Sean's fix (which I hadn't seen before), or you could get the entire guide assembly replaced under warranty like I'm doing this Friday.

Funny, I'd have thought that my dealer would have tried to lube it first if that was possible. But instead, I brought it in for the noise (among other things), and the next thing I know they've ordered me a new one and were getting me to make an appointment to get it installed.

I'll let you know if this solves the problem. I have found that the noise isn't consistent. Sometimes there's no noise, and other times it sounds like the sunroof is going to grind off. Either way, it rattles though...so maybe that'll be solved too with the new guides.

Since last Nov. our sunroof had been squeaking. Every time we took it in (yes, it was in the shop 7 times between Nov. 02 and April 03), we asked to get it fixed. We kept being told they could not duplicate the problem. FINALLY, my husband just said, look, we live in Hollywood with crappy streets and we drive hard. You may not be able to hear it, but we sure as hell do. They replaced the entire cartridge. We've been happy campers with the sunroof for since April. I'm just waiting for the next thing to happen... Oh wait, it already did.

That's what you get for opening the roof while it's raining. Or did you have an umbrella over your head while driving?

As I said, check with the folks in service about replacing your "sunroof cassette." This is the name given to the entire sunroof running gear (all except glass and wind deflector flaps). I had mine replaced under warranty last Friday. It was a 4 hour job and I'm sure that parts alone were well over $500; but my dealer did it w/o question as they were the ones who suggested this as the fix.

It worked. Since then, the sunroof glides without a squeek and any rattles I had are definitely gone. Nice fix.

I had my sunroof "cassette" replaced under warranty. It only took 7 days!

^ Hummmm, Cheese, next time you need service, come visit us in MA and I'll take you to Peabody. Sheesh, 7 days? I could have had the engine replaced about 14 times over that period...

Oh, and did I mention that I waited at the dealer during my service, enjoying free diet cokes, free online access, entertaining conversations on classic Mini history, and the Tour de France on the satellite TV? Certainly makes service a bit less painful. I love MINI of Peabody.

antsmini, I did that fix and wrote the article several months ago and the squeal has not returned. Did you use a waterproof grease and did you use enough of it?

I think I used some Castrol wheel bearing grease that I had handy.

BTW I wouldn't recommend WD-40 for this purpose, it's a water displacer but not really an effective lubricant. It would probably make the squeak go away for a little while but then it would come back before too long.

BTW, new webpage for that fix (and my other stuff): http://mywebpages.comcast.net/sjbartnik/index.html

Not sure how much longer the one at http://www.type2.com will be up.
