SC pulley puller HALP ^_^

It's come to that time when I have decided that a 15% pulley is for me, but I do not have the puller required for the job.

Could anybody loan me one for a day or 2, I will pay shipping.

2nd question, Should I have my ecu flashed after the swap?

Thank you

Get in touch with Way, I think that he rents them. I gave mine away a few months ago...

Thanks for the help but right now I dont have the $$ to pay for a rental & shipping. The rentals I looked at were the cost of the pullers that I found on ebay. Ill check with Stl mini maybe they will let me borrow theirs for a day, but that's pretty doubtful. :(

ninja edit:

I like Mini mania's idea, when they sell you the kit, they leave out the spark plugs so your motor runs cooler, BUT they include the tool that you need to pull it with.

http://www.detroittuned.com/shop/?productID=503
for $195 u get all of that, plus a tensioner stop & plugs. You can rent the puller but that is a separate $20. I got away with $210 (shipping and taxes)

At Mini Mania it's $149 and all ya get is a pulley and a belt.

Don't get me wrong, BOTH of these packages are awesome, and low cost compared to some other sites, but why has nobody come up with the idea of selling a COMPLETE complete kit, aka Belt, pulley, tensioner, plugs, AND a puller for somewhere around $200? That way the complete kit comes with everything you need to install. I know I'm splitting the hairs now so I'll wrap it up.

I'm still in search for a mini approved puller, so back to the original question, anybody have one I can borrow for a day?

Or do you know another way of getting the little guy off that won't bend the input shaft of the SC?

Thanks again for the helpful input.

MINI approved puller? You won't find one as MINI doesn't remove pulleys so you are out of luck there. Rental is the easiest and cheapest way to do this or if you are skilled enough you could cut it off but I don't really recommend it. I have done 20+ pulleys over the years and puller like the one that MINI Mania posted above is the best way. If you can't afford to rent one then I recommend that you don't go forward with this project. You could very easily break another component which would require you to spend money....

Lastly, avoid using a three pronged puller as it will bend the pulley.

I'll do that later today. Took forever to get the pulley off. You will need to buy a very substantial puller to use with this if your pulley was as tight as mine. The tool I have is the two piece Alta tool. Worked great as far as staying on. I think the puller would have broken before the Alta collar. I'm needing to go buy an inch pound torque wrench this morning before I can bolt things back together. You'll need one of those as well.

I feel like a complete idiot...I certainly could have benefitted had I used this common sense repair.
It stands to reason that 4 high voltage SPARK 3,000 times a minute would HAVE to cause a lot of unwanted heat. When I shared this with my Mini driving eldest, he improved the situation even more by removing his radiator which was storing even more unwanted and unnessary heat.

Next project will be the removal of those irritating, blinding headlights.

So sorry about my horrible grammar, I have been heavily medicated for kidney stones. I'm glad your having fun with it.

It was suppose to read "They leave out the colder plugs"

Meant in fun.
Just struck by a fit of whimsey...
On a serious note; Are normal street driven Minis particularly "picky" about plugs? Seems like just when the engineering types solved the old "plugs every 10K."
WIRES took over the replacement chores.
I have a '44 Jeep with the original plug WIRES, but it seems like every engine burble that occurs needs wire replacement now.

If the car is running fine, and there is no misfire and your wideband is ok, you don't even need to think about them really.

However if you are uping the boost on your car, or changing the amount of fuel to air ratio you should take a look at matching the correct plugs to what the motor is doing. Not only will this give a better burn but it will also help with the problem of pre det in your motor.

As for your wire statement, I have a 95' ford bronco, I have never replaced the wires or the plugs on it for 150k never had a problem with it. The motor dropped a valve before I changed a plug or a wire.

To answer 05's question. The Alta pulley has to be torqued in inch pounds, not foot pounds as it's a two piece unit. My torque wrench didn't go low enough to convert safely.

@ 05cooper, Do you notice a great difference in hp? I've been thinking of changing to the 15% for a while now.

Yes, especially in the lower RPMs the car has quite a bit more pick up. It's said anywhere from a 20-15 hp gain.
