Brand New MCS totaled in Long Beach
Brand New MCS totaled in Long Beach
It happened on Lynos between PCH and Studebaker..The Paramedics and Engine were driving off with lights and sirens on...Appeared to be a spinout, Lynos is surrounded on both sides with a high concrete barrier (LB Grand Prix blocks). This drag strip is infamous for its accidents..3/8 mile of straight, black top, with a left bend where the MCS/DS/SP/paper LB Mini Plate, crashed hard, left front and may have rolled, as the top was flat with glass all over the place..
Hope and Pray, that you can read this, I don't know if you were alone..I passed by at 3:15PM PCT.........in the same type Mini....

No Pxs
No, I'm sorry ..I would not have had time anyway with the police waiving the cars pass . This street is a 4 line with a 4 foot concrete divider on both sides and in the center...By the by.. the posted speed limit is 35 MPH with radar enforcement....over 70, I've been told, takes some skill.....and no brains........
I certainly hope the occupant/s of the MINI are okay. It's an awful thing to happen, perhaps more so at this time of year.
With all the other mishaps of late, we should all take it easy out there this season.

Interesting, I wonder if this is the same DS MCS that was at the LB MINI Poker Rally that was driving recklessly--doing burnouts, cutting off traffic. He's at the tail end of my LB MINI Poker Rally video.

Guess what guys..........Passed the same spot this morning and two more cars appear to have kissed that concerte barrier, tow trucks rolling up, and again no camera....This barrier is there because many have driven off that spot into the golf course, almost hitting a few important people...I complained to the city about no turn signal on that road. Noithing was done until they had a fatality. If you use Lyons, please slow down and watch out for those crazies....I'm I getting paranoia?
I live literally across the street from where the accident happened. By the way, it is "Loynes" not Lyons. The reason the street is so dangerous, (and is a notorious speed-trap ... watch for the motorcyle cops), is very simple: The area used to the Long Beach dump, many, many years ago. The roller-coaster pavement is caused by the decomposition of all the organic material that was dumped and buried over the years. The condo development on the corner of Loynes and PCH is jokingly called "methane manor." What you think are chimneys on the outside of the buildings are actually methane gas extractors!!! I also pray that no one was hurt. But, quite frankly, Loynes Drive is not the street to claim your bragging rights on ... Mini or no Mini.

I don't know if any of the individuals in this thread will still get an update about the topic, but I thought I'd try. I randomly came across this post for some unknown reason a decade later.
The Mini Cooper S that crashed on Loynes Dr. 12/15/04 was my car.

I'm in LB once or twice a year visiting the folks... I remember that stretch, in a rental, thinking "next time I drive the MINI down, I'll check this out again." and then thinking "Actually maybe not..." once I got to the end of it.
It's been 8 years since I sold my Mini and bought a VW GTI. I had a Hell of a time just getting to this point after all those years with me forgetting the password.....
Funny thing, last nite after returning from a pre-ST Pat's dinner with green beer..I traveled down that very same road and my dinner companion remarked about me speeding with all the bumps from the buried garbage below the street..
I said to her years ago; " I saw a brand new Mini bite the dust over at that bend near the golf course....

It actually rolled
Yes, my driving has improved and I have actually been living in NYC for some years now. But when I'm home visiting family I only travel down that road to humble myself. It was a stupid thing I did when I was younger.
And for the record, I rolled the car sadly. I of course was flying down the road towards PCH and as I approached the turn I braked instead of quickly downshifting. The car pulled right when it hit a smaller bump. I corrected, it then threw the car to the right where I quickly tried to correct a second time. At that point I was almost in the main turn. The car hit the "big bump" and caught full air and as it returned to the ground physics fully took over. The Mini was pointing the direction of the turn, but the speed/weight of the car wanted to keep going straight. It did a barrel roll, landed on all four tires and came to rest by slamming into the T rail. I walked away with some stitches to my left arm which busted through the driver side window.
I owe my life to the designers of that car.
