Moving to Cali...
I might be moving out to San Diego in August..... Anyone know how close Brecht MINI is and if they are any good? Also whats the job market like out there right now? Is there a big MINI scene out there? Thanks.

Ant, do a search. I remember reading a while back about MANY people's opinions that Brecht was about as arrogant and un-customer-friendly a dealership as they'd ever dealt with. There were, of course, those who claimed to have had no problem with them, but as always, I suspect that these are the people for whom money is not a concern.
This was the salespeople, as I recall. The service dept might be better.

antsmini,
I've been to the dealership, of course I didn't buy from them, but things seem to have change a little,, as for the service, Which by the way is at the BMW site, katnkevin had there MINI S serviced there and all he could tell me was that they were great.
What part of San Dog are you planning to move to???

Definitely check the dealer rating section for them. I've heard way more bad than good on both the sales and service end of the deal.
The next closest dealer that is worth going to (again, from personal experience and from what I have heard) is Crevier MINI. But, depending on where in SD you are going to be moving too, it can be about a 60 mile trek.
Huge MINI scene out here too. SCMM is up to 200 members and there is almost an event a month. I know that the group in San Diego is very active as well. Not to mention that they are a swell group of MINIacs!

It'll be great to have you running with us. Quite a few places around here, depending on what kind of running you like. Do be careful though, CHP/ local pd is cracking down on street racing, all thanks to 2F2F (stupid movie!)

Yeah it will be good to meet you considering we are both into the street racing scene, and yes I heard about the police over there even going as far as ticketing for intakes? Are you in San Diego? Also what is car theft like around there? Do I have to worry about that?

Live in L.A., work in Compton. Cops will ticket you for every little thing. rfibanez is in Irvine, it's worse there. car theft is bad, but the most common car stolen is the Camry. but it'll still be reflected in your car insurance. My advice, get Lo-jack, you'll be fine. between that and the built-in ignition interupt, you've stumped most of the boosters around here. But if they really want to take your car,..
It's not that bad. Left coast is about as car culture as it gets. you know you used to live here right? SCMM has a run a month, when they don't have anything cooking, someone else inevitably does. hell you could go on your own during the week up and down the coast. MightyMiniZ is cooking up a Track day, might become a regular affair. It's just a matter how many days a week you can take off of work.
I live in San Diego. Tried to buy from Brecht. The "Motoring Advisors" were nice enough, they just don't sell at MSRP. I gave them a shot at my business, but they wanted MSRP + lojack, paint protection, etc. for about $2K over MSRP. I ordered from Long Beach about 100 miles north and my MSRP MINI should be here in a couple weeks.
Hi Ants,
I just moved to San Diego last February, and I'm loving it! As far as Brecht MINI, yes, the sales staff have lots of 'tude. I just got back from their body shop, and although the people there were nice, I think they marked up quite a bit on their estimate. I called this morning to get an idea of what it might cost (just ballpark) and the price they quoted for the part over the phone was almost half what they wrote in their estimate!
As far as work goes, it's been about as slow as it was when I left NYC. (I'm in graphic design and production). It's just starting to pick up a bit, though. I don't think that it's quite as slow here as it is in most of the country, though.
There is a VERY active MINI community here. As DB said, the San Diego 'branch' of SCMM is becoming more organized by the week! Please get in touch with us if/when your decision is final. We'd love to have you along!
And LA is 2.5-3 hours from San Diego, depending on what part you're going to and how fast you're driving!

Yeah I am not 100% definate in the move but it is HIGHLY likely at this point. A few friends are moving out and getting a beach house, so if I can work out all the details it will go through just fine. I am very excited, I really cant wait to live in San Diego and I heard it is beautiful. I also do freelance art, so maybe you can give me the names of some local firms who are looking for people.

Beach house sounds like a blast! Definitely worth it!
As far as work goes, it's just starting to pick up. I've been here for almost 4 months now, and I haven't had much more than a few short-term jobs here and there. By the time you get here, things may be rolling along... or not. It's so hard to say. Just be prepared to live off your savings for a while and you'll probably be fine. I'd be happy to talk to you about my experiences and where I've been to / looked for work.

You'll love the weather here. Lotta good drivin' days. If you're in to street racing, beware - the crack-down is real tough down here, due to some fatalities.
The work situation is like most places - down now, due to go up is the word. You pay for that good weather here - cost of living can be high, so clip coupons and eat a lot of mac & cheese.
Look us up when you're in the area -

If you're into street racing, please don't come. Unless you plan to join SCCA and become legal.
We see too many mangled ricers and muscles on the morning news. The last thing I want to see is a mangled MINI.

I'll second that! I was tickted by the cops a few weeks ago and I wasn't even racing!
Don't listen to those old guys you can come even if your into the 'street racing scene'. If you are then your gonna like So Cal. I'm here in Cali too, see you at the next meet!

Ants,
I can't add much to what has already been said about Brecht, since you
already have the Mini I'd say you'll be just fine with there service/parts departmetns - I've used them a couple of times and couldn't have been more pleased (bought my car overseas and shipped to states) with the service. I'd
also second someone else's earlier opinion that SoCal is the center of the
car universe, you will see it all here. One last thing, street racing is still, as
always about common sense, it can still be done impromtu within reason
in selective areas, obviously if they catch you here in downtown or residential
areas they will throw the key away and we all know that. I will say I'm encouraged
by the number of racers who show up at Qualcomm stadium for their 1/8th mile drag which was primarily set up to get kids off the street, lots of "ricer burners" (I've yet to run my Mini, waiting on the Randy install in 2 weeks) but you get all kinds and still another track has just been opened in Barona (near by). Now if we could just get a real auto-cross/racetrack that ordinary folks could afford to use!
Your going to love San Diego and best of luck getting work - see you down the road.
