Sept 1st possible Meteor Shower
Sept 1st possible Meteor Shower
according to nasa.........
"On Sept. 1, 2007, a flurry of bright and oddly-colored meteors might—emphasis on might--come streaming out of the constellation Auriga, putting on a beautiful early morning show for sky watchers in western North America"
They are not sure if infact the meteors will show up.....
But will a shower actually materialize? The answer lies in the unknown contents of the debris stream.
We have so little experience with ancient debris from long-period comets," notes Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office (MEO) at the Marshall Space Flight Center. "Almost anything could happen—from a fizzle to a beautiful meteor shower.
We expect the outburst to peak at 11:36 UT (4:36 a.m. PDT) +/- 20 minutes on Sept. 1st," says Jenniskens. "The whole event should last about 2 hours and be visible from California, Oregon, Hawaii and the eastern Pacific Ocean."
I just think this is a good chance to just drive my mini out of the city lights and see if the shower does happen...
Whatever happens at least I will take a mini Road trip to Joshua Tree in my MC

Hmmmm...Joshua Tree is so beautiful...very tempting, even if it may be awfully hot out there.
Edit: I'm going to move this from Off Topic to the SoCal regional forum.

Sunrise picnic breakfast!
Even if the meteor shower fizzles, it will still be wonderful to see the sunrise in the desert.

2 hours out from downtown LA.
are we shooting to catch the meteor shower full on? 2xistRob quoted 4:36 am as the peak. maybe we could leave around 1:00/1:30?

I did a quickie Google Maps directions from my West L.A. zip code (90066) to Joshua Tree:
141 mi – about 2 hours 26 mins
(up to 4 hours 40 mins in traffic)
Basically, you take I-10 to 62/Joshua Tree Hwy. and follow the signs to the National Monument.

So - I am thinking that it is going to be best to meet somewhere en-route.
I woulkd take the 91 to the 60/10 and can meet up with you guys at around Riverside.
If I can persuade a couple of local OC'ers to come it will probably be a plan to meet there at around 2:30ish

We could meet about 2:30 AM at the A&W in Cabazon, about 15 miles west of Palm Springs. Here's the address:
A&W
49030 Seminole Drive
Cabazon, CA 92230
This meeting point is about 11 miles from Hwy. 62, which we take to Joshua Tree off of I-10. It's about 40 miles from the A&W to Joshua Tree, or about 45 minutes.
We can wait until 3 AM for stragglers, then caravan together to Joshua Tree.
Anyone in Central Cal or NorCal wishing to plan a similar event should post a new thread in the respective forums.
Thoughts?
