Cleanup of Crankshaft Pulley = really Bad idea... thread

Given the issues with PMs being posted and the sniping that has occurred in this thread I would like to propose a clean up plan as follows:

- remove posted PMs and comments about them and place them in a thread that is moved out of public view

If this is agreeable please post a follow up. I'm also happy to leave the thread as is if desired but, again, post a follow up to let me know that.

As a result of these PMs being posted a warning was issued to the author of the PM in regards to use of the site to launch a personal attack. That said, going forward PMs should not be posted to the public forums. If you receive a PM that you feel is a personal attack (or violates site guidelines in some way) please use the Contact Us form to report it. We've updated the site guidelines to indicate that any use of the site (forums, pms, etc.) to launch an attack or to harass someone is considered a violation and subject to a first strike warning. As before if you see someone post something that you feel is an obvious violation of the guidelines please use the button to report it.

Thanks

Mark

I'm glad there was a reprimand to the author of the PM. No bullying on NAM, please!

I'd like to see the thread intact. That's America, man!

Clean up the thread with all OT comments. Keep the discussion to the theme of the thread.

I vote for a leave as is....

Spats are natural. But if there is a consensus to clean up the thread, we should also capture the information on the e-mail copyright information into another sticky thread (somewhere) so that the information can be available for others.

Also, I'm not so sure that a policy explicitly preventing posting of PMs is in the interest of fair and balenced discussion. There is law on point on the subject, and this ought to be the governing standard. Sometimes, very good information comes up in PMs that SHOULD be posted....

My 02 cents...

Matt

I agree with Matt. He did a good job find the law. FULL Email or PMs should NOT be posted. Fair use of Facts ... not opinion is OK (per what the law says about Fair Use and Facts).

I also agree with the Sticky on Copyright laws. Great Idea

i'm with the doc. It should be the privacy decision of the receiver of the PM unless specifically requested by the sender and agreed to by the recipient.

It seems especially pernicious when someone of high post count, previous moderator standing and a large reputation shows himself behind the scenes to be a cad.

Meanwhile, back here in reality, if email was private, Michael Brown might still be employed by FEMA.

Legalities aside (and I do not agree that an unsolicited personal message with no commercial content is copyrightable) there are a million ways that email can be released to the world, from accidental disclosure or loss of a backup copy to deliberate sabotage.

Email is not the same as a telephone conversation, where there are no legal electronic copies unless both parties are aware of the copying - there is Always electronic storage of email.

If you don't want a note made public because it would embarrass you, DON'T SEND IT! Take ten seconds, bite your tongue and control yourself like an adult, then revise it to be socially acceptable before sending.

This is getting ridiculous

Anything generated on a federal computer belongs to the US government ... not the same subject at all.

I dont agree with some speed limits.. Then again, I dont have to agree .. instead, I have to abide by them, just as you (or possibly pay the penalty)
