Theads with photos / Ads taking too long to load...

Curious as to why these past few months, even with 5G / Verizon Business internet and wired to computer why such issue loading NAM threads with content which have photos.

One has to contantly spin the wheel on the mouse 20-30 times as page loads to see first post doing so for about 30 seconds otherwise it sits towards bottom loading ads and content foreva.....Only happens with NAM, and have awesome upload and down load numbers here.

Most times I just say screw it, and don't even bother reading that particular thread......ridiculous...

Same here.

Legit critique.

It is an odd glitch and quite frustrating.

Like a big blur wall.

LOL

Another critique from me would be the strange continuous layout of the endless page --- on multi-page threads it is nearly impossible to find something. I use google image search frequently for searching NAM since it is such a vast archive with a rich cornucopia of content and it works out well unless it lands on a massive multi-page thread where it just keeps scrolling as opposed to the traditional format of numerated pagination where you'd click 1,2,3, etc.

Exactly, I am wondering if this all began after the pages started to have the "Related Threads:" section at the bottom....which has about 20% chance or less of being a "related thread".

I hated that when NAM did some update to the site a few years ago and it became a default. I think that’s what causes most of the completely off topic replies in some threads, people don’t realize they scrolled past the end of one thread into another...

You can can change this in your user control panel in the edit options section. From there, go to thread display options and disable infinite scroll.

Fantastic!

Many thanks for the tip, I didn't realize that it was an option.

I still get slow page/picture loading even though I’ve set my options for page viewing instead of infinite scroll. Also, I just noticed right below the infinite scroll setting is the option to disable related threads.

Yeah, it’s a really annoying “feature”, especially because of the weird glitch/pause that happens when it loads more content and then scrolls into another thread without you realizing it. Of course they thought it was so great they made it the default for everyone without letting you know there’s still the the option for traditional page viewing/thread navigation.

Ok. so far disabled the "infinate" scroll and disabled "related threads" options...
I also switched browser to Firefox.
Still experiencing what I was before....Lengthy page loading, photos half display or blurred for few seconds....

I have my preferences set to view oldest post first upon opening a thread so I can see the original post first, however the page opens at the most recent post, I scroll to top only to be knocked back down the page again sometime two and three times as the page loads...until I can FINALLY view first post in the thread....

This my current down and up load speeds....

You're lucky, I can only get 3Mbit/sec DSL where I live.

The "speed test" is to a great extent meaningless, because it only shows how fast the link is between you and the first node of the Verizon network (or whoever your service provider is.) It doesn't account for the speed of all of the rest of the links of the internet, or the various servers that source the data and the routers that it all goes through to get to your home.

Most of the problem is the way the web page your are viewing is constructed. It doesn't all come from one server all at once, it is made up of bits and pieces from many individual internet sites and services. Just for the fun of it, I picked a random NAM page and using an add-in tool in Chrome, I looked at how many individual internet sites contribute data, scripts, etc. to build the page. Any guesses?

67.

17 are NAM or Internet Brands. The rest are "content delivery", trackers, ad servers, facebook, google, etc. that all get pinged and supply a script or some part of the data to build the page you're viewing. The basic structure of the page comes from one place, the text from another, the images from multiple other places, and then ads from all over. Here is the list:

That's 67 different servers, whether they are physically separate machines or just virtual instances, maybe sometimes in the same data center but often not, that have to receive a request and return data to build the page that you will eventually view. Scripts call other scripts that then call another level of scripts. How fast that happens depends on the speed of the links to those sites, how busy those sites are, and how much data they are contributing to the page. It is amazing that it all works as well as it does, really. That's the way the web is these days, especially any "free" forum. The vendors pay for some of it, and ads are the rest. It's not just NAM, it is everywhere. Pick any special interest forum you like and it will be the same thing. Some studies show that ads are over 50% of the time it takes to load a page. The current corona virus shutdown probably doesn't help since it means that everyone is stuck at home and surfing the web, more demand means slower response.

On the other hand, the ads are what makes it possible for Internet Brands to provide this forum without charging you money to use it. I pay a few bucks a month to subscribe to the New York Times, how many people would pay $1/month to subscribe to NAM? It's a trade-off.

The forum seems to tax my computer since anytime I visit it, the fans spin up due to the extra load put on the system/processor. I also get the blurry, half pages, and multiple jumps when trying to navigate before the full page load.

On the first/last post issue, how are you entering the thread to view? I also have the preference to display the oldest first and if I click on the thread title/link in blue, that's what happens. but if I click on the blue square icon with the down arrow (go to first new post) before the title, it takes me to the newest post at the bottom.

You might want to try lowering the number of posts per page to get the page to load faster in threads with more pictures. I don't remember how many "use forum default" is, but I went back down to 10 from 40 and it's still slow to load most pages. 5/page is the lowest, but it might get annoying to have to load new pages more often when viewing a popular thread.

Thanks, well just now I clicked onto the blue link in the email update, it puts me at bottom of page twice....images are slow to load.

I changed the page content as you suggested from default to 10, Im hoping that may help speed things up too.

Again, many thanks !!

Certainly appreciate all the help !!

Not sure how it works from an email update so maybe it ignores your preferences and always goes to the newest post from the email links.

The blue thread title links from the subscribed threads page in the "User CP" or "New Posts" in the second menu bar, and probably any thread title when navigating the forum, is what takes me to the oldest post per my preference, but I almost always use the "go to first new post" button right before the title. If everything is working right, that button should take you to the next post where you left off the last time.
