Oil Leak

Hi everybody-

New to NAM. We just picked up a 2012 MCS4 w/22k miles 2 weeks ago. Today, I found this on the backside of the engine:

I can't find the source of this leak so far. Any ideas?

Warranty coverage should still be in effect, take it to the dealer would be my advice.

Huh that is kind of an odd place. My first guess would be valvecover gasket. But it's still under warranty. Make it the dealerships problem.

That's my plan, I have an appointment on Monday. I'm just trying to figure out what it might be, or more importantly how long the car will be in the shop. I must admit I'm surprised to have these problems after only two weeks.

Welcome Firstcountryman. Sorry to hear about your issue. Thing to remember is this might be a 2 week old car to you but its closer to a 4 year old car. A car of that age shouldnt be having oil
problems but since it is used you have no way of knowing how the car was treated or modified before. These cars need regular maintanance and an unmaintained or incorrectly over modded engine could easily have early issues.

True, it is a four-year-old car. I just know that I've had several other makes, foreign and domestic, and never found an oil leak on a car that's a little less than 3 1/2 years old with less than 23,000 miles. It concerns me because it's my wife's car and I don't want her to get stranded.

I think I'm going to look closer at extended warranties though...

If I'm seeing this correctly it looks like you have the oil wicking issue thru the oil pressure solenoid harness. I can barley make out in your pic but the black wire loom towards the top is wet and that is an indication

Good news is you haven't experienced any elec issues which come with that problem

Better news is that it's under warranty.

Better than that is is there is an updated solenoid harness

Bad news it will be in the shop for a few days

Search oil wicking and you will see other posts

Thanks!

I was concerned about the oil on the harness.

Even better is that we'll be going out of state in the near future and I'll be able to leave it with the dealer.

Thanks for the images.

Yep, a solenoid leak. And a transfer case seal leaking. New xfer case as well.

And new headlight housings. Both had what appeared to be UV damage (not moisture) on the inside out the housing. Never saw that before, and the Car has spent its life up north, away from the sun belt.
