Passenger Side Leg Room Eliminator

So I'm poking around on the passenger side foot well and discover an edge, with a flap on the door side. Pull up on the flap - its hinged? So I pull the whole damn thing up and out. Its an engineered piece of styrofoam that was carpeted on the exposed side and taped to the carpeted floor underneath and had two pegs that fit into two holes in the floor. I can't figure why this is in the Roadster and probably the Coupe but it effectively eliminates about 10" of leg room.
Anyone else discover this, remove it or know a purpose for keeping it in place? It would be a great place to hide something but the extra leg room is better.

Sounds like your car was destined for the drug cartels before you bought it.

:-)

I didn't realize you still posted here and gave a Roadster, Maybee (Chuck... right?). Hope you are doing well!

There was a thread a couple months ago about that seemingly useless padding in the footwell. IIRC, nobody had a good explanation of why MINI engineers would gave done that.

The best theory that I've seen on the forum about why the roadster and the coupe have this attachment on the passenger floor (and the extra-thick glove box door) is for added safety for the passenger. If you think about those two pieces together, the idea of it being some sort of 'anti-submarining' feature (as the other poster described it) starts to make sense.

Of course, this is pure speculation and MINI could have just needed a spot to stash extra styrofoam!

CR&PW&JB. could you perhaps post a link to that thread or send it to me in a PM. A buddy of mine just bought a Coupe with only 2500 miles on, practically brand new for a used car price. But anyway I want to send him the link. We have a disabled friend that prefers my car because of the legroom easier for him to get in and out of.

I spent 15 minutes, or so, looking for it last night. I never have liked the search engine on this site.

Plus, I wonder if it wasn't a thread about something else that evolved into a discussion about that piece of styrofoam, making it even harder to find.

If I am able to find it, I'll be sure to post it here.

You must believe me when I say I did do a search for this before posting but as it was stated the search tool is worthless.
Anyway, I'm still here CRPWJB and I did trade in Matilda for the Roadster - best move I ever made though it was sad to see her leave. Mostly just a lurker anymore on all the forums unless something interesting shows up.

For Sale: 1 Passenger Side Leg Room Eliminator Accessory (PSLREA). Hardly used and never by me. $200 OBO.

Sadly that price may be accurate. No offers here. I will continue to let my passengers ride with comfort.

I was absent from NAM for a couple years. I came back earlier this year and hardly saw any of the old faces from the good years. Glad a couple are still around !

Post more often !!

This is fact or at least the official reason:

The footrest is there to encourage the passenger to have his or her knees bent to help control the body's motion that may create injury risks in the event of an accident. This is due to the unique windshield angle and lower header height of these models.

In addition, Coupes and Roadsters have a different glovebox design as well to control body motion.
