R58 Alta thermal blanket purchase (Pros & Cons)
Alta thermal blanket purchase (Pros & Cons)
I'm debating whether or not to pull the trigger on an alta blanket for my 2012 JCW coupe. There's one available local for $250, but I'm weighing the pros and cons.
I've had to replace oil feed lines on my previous mini to the tune of $1000 and I'm curious if the blanket would a) help prevent this problem b) cause any additional problems. I've heard keeping the heat in the turbo could cause the oil to build up within the turbo of the car as opposed to the feed lines.
Any thoughts?

You can buy the insulation pad from the dealer for les than $100. Your oil feed lines should be insulated from the factory on your Coupe. Mine was. Your bonnet will be nice and cool with the pad installed and your stripes will not melt or discolor. There are no cons.

The Alta removes the stock metal heat shield. I don't like this has the metal fits the best and works as designed. The blanket will then cause the heat to come around the edges and can damage the valve cover or anything else that can't handle the temps when you use it without the metal in place. We've seen these issues anytime someone removes the stock metal heat shield. That is why we designed our turbo wrap to only go on the hot side of the turbo and have your reinstall the stock metal heat shield to keep everything working as designed.
Check ours out as it is the original designed back in 2007 and much more affordable.

Shouldn't need a heat shield after this. However I have one because I think it cleans up the space.

just curious, what did you connect the bottom of the ALTA blanket to? since I believe it's supposed to screw into the lower heat shield and I wasn't sure how it would do w/o it
I used stainless straps and connected the rings (that are supposed to get the screws that connect to the OEM heat shield) on the bottom of the blanket together.
I see a meth line hiding...
Do you really get more power from the R58 JCW engine?
I am just curious
.
You won't feel any difference in power. Things will will be cooler. Me? I was just itching to ditch those pesky heat shields being that I am always tinkering.
It doesn't cover the oil line. The oil line has it's own cover (similar to stock) ... let's the heat out and reflects the heat away.
I do see your point with the nm heat shield though.
