One other thing. I ordered mine from ECStuning.com and it is stiff but kind'a wrinkly looking. From the photos they look smooth. Anyone else have small marks on their?

no creases/wrinkles/marks on mine. just the molding lines to conform to the bonnet.

I just picked up my '14 Roadster S today. There is absolutely no insulation under the hood. Is MINI responsible for furnishing the insulation and expanding rivets or clips from the factory? Or is this strictly a voluntary after-market add-on that I'm responsible for. Also, are these authentic MINI-produced parts (OEM)?

I'm technologically ignorant of all things mechanical. I would appreciate your help by responding to these questions. Thank you.

Dave - From what we heard future up in the thread they were on some of the 2012 and 2013. It looks like it was hit and miss dependent on production. It shows on the MINI parts diagram, but MINI phases items in and out and dependent on country. Best to check other models close to that production at your dealer. As of what it looks like now its an add on for people. They are Genuine MINI parts , MINI parts are sometimes shared on the BMW side for hardware and such. It will be on our site as "Genuine MINI" or "Genuine BMW". Install is easy and put in location with the expanding plastic rivets, which we have listed above.

Gregory K - If you look really close at some of our photo you will see some small creases on the back of it, it comes from sometimes MINI like that dependent of how they were inventoried / shipped from MINI, its kind of a fragile product. If you have any problem always PM me, we are here to help.

I paid for my insulation mat and installed it myself in about ten minutes. EZ- peazy

I have a 2013 R56 JCW and do not plan on putting any insulation under the hood. Also have a JCW CF scoop and NM Ti heat shield. I have not seen a heat shield on any R56s in my area.

Here's what mine looked like when I took it out of the packing sent from ECTuning. Think I should send it back? It is under the hood after all!

After driving your Coupe for a few miles, put your hand on the front or center of your bonnet. Does it feel hot? If so, buy the insulation matt and fittings ASAP!!! I bought one at my dealer.

insulation

I had a new 2012 s coupe with none . I just picked up a new 2013 jcw coupe that has the insulation ??? Very big difference in the temp of the hood .

My Coupe is an S with factory bonnet stripes. I may get the insulation just to protect the stripes.

I took delivery of my 2014 S Coupe 2 weeks ago. I have stripes and it is equipped with under bonnet insulation. The bonnet is not hot to touch anywhere after a 150 mile drive home.

I have no insulation under the bonnet. I only have 200 miles on my '14 Roadster S, but I check the bonnet's temperature often after drives. The area above the scoop gets very warm or somewhat hot, but the scoop itself doesn't really get too hot to the touch. In fact, quite often the scoop is barely warm following a drive. Not sure what to think. Once we re-locate to Florida, the bonnet will certainly get hotter outside the winter months.

The turbo, where it gets hot, is in front of the scoop. If you value your stripes, get the insulation mat.

My entire scoop stays relatively normal in temperature, or at least so when compared to portions of the bonnet. The bonnet area just above the scoop seems somewhat hot on summery days. Over the past few cool days, however, neither the bonnet or scoop gets exceptionally warm, much less hot. I don't have any stripes, DAVESTER, so I'm beginning to wonder if it's necessary to buy the insulator shield to protect the bonnet paint finish.

Idk about the hood stripes, but my roof stripes are destroyed.

I removed the insulation as I couldn't stand the thought of all that heat soaking up the engine bay and turbo.

Removed the black scoop grill so all the heat actually escapes the engine bay. That scoop actually is functional lol.

Only downside is I have to wipe down the engine bay more often haha.

Without getting deep into the weeds: There are portions on the engine that work most efficiently when hot, some work best at relatively very high temps. Other areas of the engine do best at relatively cool temps. ( intake air charge for one)
Thermally shocking very hot parts with cold air or water from an open air scoop is not a practice I would recommend. You may have underestimated your downside by a significant factor. Happy Motoring

I agree on the thermal shock, after a 30 minute moto on my 450 we never ever washed it down right after. Let it cool down first through natural heat dissipation.

Think I'll be fine. 37k and motoring strong.

Wrapped the hot side turbo with lagging as well as the downpipe with heat wrap. Keeping the heat where it should be.
Beats having a cooked turbo oil line, then failure. All too common with these cars.

But I must ask, what, in the Mini engine bay, needs be engulfed in heat that the little tiny turbo is producing?

Just adding to the story.
My (R59, yes I know I am in the R58 forum) 2012 MCSJCW came with the insulation but not the heat shield. Its currently at the Dealer under warranty as its melted, gone brown and crumbly at 4,200 kms (2600 miles) on road in the exact area the heat-shield you guys have pictured ends up.

I'll see what they do and report back.
