auto trans lag

I have had my 07 Cooper with Automatic for 6 weeks and 1500 miles. I have a real issue with the tranny not shifting properly after turning a corner. Does not downshift correctly, big lag time before it downshifts. If you step on the gas to force it to downshift, it goes into a lower gear than what it should and tachs out the engine. Took it to the dealer and they said that it was an adaptive tranny that would learn my driving habits and would take a while to program itself. They have got to do better than that, very weak explanation in my opinion. I have had similar problems with another car, and the manufacturer had to update the progamming on the tranny. Any one else experiencing this problem.

No, sorry. There are some times when I do have a lag turning a corner. It usually happens at the same spot - there is a dip in the road when turning and stepping on the gas lags until I straighten up, but I'm sure it is the dsc kicking in. Also, it usually only happens at slow speeds going less than 15 mph.

I haven't had a problem with the 'kick-down', but I haven't put the pedal to the floor yet either. After driving it today I was actually quite impressed how it responded as I'm coming out of driving it in granny mode.

Sounds more like traction control kiicking in to me.

I am looking at ordering an auto MCS due to the Los Angeles traffic. Does the S have the same problem?

I'm considering an auto as well. But I think the no LSD option will kill that plan.

Curious how good it is driving with the paddles.

Shifting with the paddles works great. FWIW, I don't have DSC or LSD. I really notice the problem when I turn a corner that goes immediately up hill. Dealer has acknowledged the problem because they were able to duplicate it themselves. But, they and BMW have no solution.

I have the R53 MCS automatic. The transmissions are the same between the R53 and R56 when it comes to the automatic.

I had the exact same problems as Jerrypare described. There's nothing that can be done about it unfortunately. It's the software and the way they have it set up. It will not learn to not do that.

The solution for me, which won't work for Jerry, was to drive around in sport drive (shifter kicked over in the drive slot). It stays in gears longer so there isn't as much a chance for the downshift issues. It also got better once I put a pulley and exhaust on there.

My solution is a manual tranny.

(sorry, couldn't resist... I realize that manual is not an option for everyone... but I love the total control it gives!)

The paddles are your friend

Since I drive in manual mode shifting at will most of the time I don't have this problem - the other % of the time I am in sport mode and I have noticed that in this and other BMW manumatics the auto modes do adapt after you drive in manual mode for awhile and reflect more aggressive shifting.

PS: I guess if it is predictable behavior and you do want to stay in auto mode you can always just flick the paddle for a downshift at that point without going into manual mode - the auto will resume shifting that way.
