Infamous Dash Rattle

Cheers all,

So I just read last Sunday's Mercury News (Silicon Valley, CA) review of the new (2007) MC. In short they loved it - nothing bad to say. However...

The writter did mention his test car had this "annoying dash rattle" for the week he had it. The writter went on to say the MINI rep told him this was a problem in very early production '07 models and that MINI has corrected it.

Is this true? The only thing I LOATHE about my 2002 & 2004 is that "dash rattle" - if this is something that is haunting the Mini, I won't be picking up the one I ordered due to arrive in April.

Thanks again for your expertise!

Cheers,

None of the R56's I have test driven have had a dash rattle or any other squeek from the interior. They have all been tight as a drum.

I just read over at www.mini2.com someone reporting the first mysterious R56 windshield crack.

Dash rattles have been reported from some early UK owners as well.

Could the rep be referring to the dash storage area that was causing rattles which has now been sealed?

I bet he is referring to the storage area rattle (above glovebox)... which has been resolved.

The dash rattle must be infamous because my R56 doesn't make any sounds at all...except for that sweet diesel-esque injector music at idle!

No rattles anywhere--2400 miles. No sunroof windnoise, either.

That one was only a matter of time, to be honest.

Every car forum I've been on has now and then reported windshields that developed stress cracks.

I've got a Dash buzz... kind of annoying. Seems like it's related to what they "sealed" shut.

No rattles almost 1000 miles. I did get a small chip in my windshield but I think it may have to do with the medium rock that hit it on the highway and clumps of dirt I then found on the front of my car.

MINI may have stopped the dash rattle, but I wouldn't call sealing a storage area that was obviously intended to be usable "resolved." The fact that MINI seems to have such difficulty designing a decent latch is not comforting.

No rattle - quiet as could be

Very well-fitted, with no rattles, whistles, or anything. I was pretty impressed.

I, too, have a faint buzz. Don't hear it when the audio is on. Buzz appears during acceleration through the gears, not while driving at a steady speed.

I do not have my car nor do I know what the buzz sounds like, however it could be the head unit not properly grounded as you say it appears during acceleration.

R56, couple weeks driving it now, no rattles, but then again my storage area above the glovebox is one of the ones that sealed.
