R56 Things you didn't know about your R56 MINI
Hey Folks,
Weird thing happened last week. I was driving home and was playing with the window toggles (while driving), and during some weird/odd combo of something (can't remember what the hell I was doing), the driver side side "automatically" positioned itself in a 1/2 way position.
I've tried several times (double taps on the toggle, up and down quickly, etc) to replicate the effect to no avail. Any clues?

if i remember correctly it also descibes an override procedure should this happen

I was thinking there are so many "undocumented" tweaks on these cars, it may be something that is built in but we don't know about it. Personally it'd be nice to have had a toggle double tap for a half-way position.
Up to a point, yes. But negative camber in the rear will tend to keep the rear of the car from trying to become the front of the car.
Pretty much all cars are set up for understeer these days. That's one of the ways the MINI is set up for that.

There's 2 degrees negative on the rear, unadjustable. I gather the mark 1 new MINI was a bit tail-happy so I presume this was to stabilise it more. Then people like me add rear antirollbars to make it unstable again!
(Except we do it by reducing grip; I'd prefer to adjust the camber and maintain grip levels while neutralizing the handling.)
That's unless they've done a running change for the 2013 model. Mine's a 2010 LCI, so the current version.
I couldn't work out why the engine got cooler when I drove harder, until I looked it up on NAM.
Unless you have toe-out. That is what eats tires, especially in combination with negative camber.
Usually, a larger sway bar increases the overall grip that the car has. It's just that it increases the end you do not stiffen more than it increases the end you stiffen. So it seems like the stiffer end grips less--but it very often will have the same or more grip then before!
Don't forget, if you want to change something that's on the key fob, you need to program both fobs, assuming you want them alike.
Easily remedied in NCS.
Let's see. I've had my MCS for about three weeks now. Things I discovered after getting it home that I did not read about here:
The fog lights are sectioned so they look like they are on all of the time. The top 1/4 is on with the headlights and the larger bottom is the actual fog light.
Turning on the daytime running light option turns on all exterior lights just not the headlights. I want just the headlights on. If I wanted the rest I would just use the headlight switch.
The little signal strength bars in the top right of the radio is the bluetooth signal strength.
HD radio is pretty cool. I can listen to different programming on a station I normally don't listen to. For example, Classic Rock on the HD2 channel where country plays on HD1 and analog. I have more FM stations to listen to.
The engine compartment is so cramped I cant see the accessory belt. I have always worked on all of my vehicles. This one does not look promising.
Sport button reduces the amount of assist in the steering.
The rear seats have little extensions so they lock straight up to help fit boxes in the back.
I have to us my gas powered blower to get all of the water out of the honeycomb grills after it is washed. It actually works really well to get water out of all of the cracks after washing.
The exhaust pipe is one solid part from the downpipe to the muffler tips.
The left rear suspension has a sensor to determine how much it squats. I assume that has to do with how the HID lights auto level every time they come on.

The turbo pulls hard in the midrange, but the power seems to fall off as the tach approaches 6k.

Basically, you code your Mini to many cool options with a 36 dollar cable and some windows software made for BMW.

I see, sorta. I understand what it does, but still don't know what the letters stand for. If you look up NCS on the internet, you get a wide range of responses, ranging from Newborn Calf Serum to Non-Chinese Speaking.
Personally, I figured it stood for National Council of Skunks...

It means Nincompoop Crazy Sheila. ( Sheila being the operative Aussie word for female).
Thanks for that - a few snippets there that are new to me.
"The fog lights are sectioned so they look like they are on all of the time. The top 1/4 is on with the headlights and the larger bottom is the actual fog light." The top part is a parking light. If you don't have fog lights, you still get all the glass but only the parking light functions. Also, when you turn off the car, if you push the indicator stalk one way, just the parking lights on that side of the car come on.
"The little signal strength bars in the top right of the radio is the bluetooth signal strength." With the phone connect option, they show the phone's signal strength.
"The engine compartment is so cramped I cant see the accessory belt." Better than the old Minis though
"Sport button reduces the amount of assist in the steering." It also increases the throttle sensitivity. And on the LCI Cooper S, it makes popping noises in the exhaust on overrun.
"The turbo pulls hard in the midrange, but the power seems to fall off as the tach approaches 6k" That's a function of a relatively small turbo. It spins up quickly to reduce turbo lag and to provide boost at low revs, but it doesn't have more to give at high revs.

In the Australian MINI, this is the standard behaviour too. Our windows are also one-touch up and down, but not the sun roof.
