Hello all new here. Got a 2012 R56 that had blown valves that I rebuilt.
I went ahead and changed the transmission filter but want to be sure the fluid level is correct. When I took the pan off I got about 3.5 liters (im in canada) out and put that back in.
Now I went ahead to change it again and only got alittle under 1 liter out. But the motor is cold. Will I get more out when its at 40C +/- 5 ?.
So I should reach 40C (i have a scanner) and then drain the oil and then immediately refill with the same amount? Do I need to keep the motor running?
Does that sound correct to get a little under 1 liter out on a cold motor ?
Id be filling it from the bottom as I have that adapter and a pump.
Did you remove the stand pipe from the oil pan the 2d time or did you just remove the plug?
The engine has to be running to check the fluid level, but it should not be running when you drain the trans fluid. To check the fluid level, the car has to be up in the air and level (both laterally and longitudinally). The stand pipe that screws into the pan also has to be installed to the correct height. Start the engine, and let it run, Cycle through Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive (pausing 3 seconds at each detent). Repeat 2-3 times. Remove the drain plug, if fluid comes out, let it comes out until the flow turns to a drip; reinstall the plug (finished). If no fluid comes out (except what was in the stand pipe), fill at the fill port until fluid comes out; again, wait for the flow to turn to a drip, and reinstall the plug.
The car had 200000km and I don't think the filter and tranny oil was ever changed. I just want to be sure there's enough fluid as well. It was black when I removed it the first time. I just want to be sure there's enough fluid as some got lost when I first removed the pan.
I had to replace the pan as well. The oil plug stripped when trying to remove it. So that too gave me an indication I doubt it was ever serviced. I removed the stand pipe the second time as well.
As for the height of the stand pipe I just snugged it lightly until I felt it wouldn't go anymore. Is thst correct?

Did you drain and refill the transmission 5 times in one service time? That would mean you would need 4-5 jugs of ATF fluid? Or did you just refill the tranny with the fluid that came out in #2? Do I need to perform all 5 steps to ensure the transmission is at proper level?
I wanted to do those steps over the course of several months to ensure I get most old fluid out. Could I drain the diff and pan and then refill with that amount then bring the car up to temp and then remove the ABN pump and see if it streams out or dribbles?
Yes, complete procedure was completed in one day with the car raised level on jack stands. This way, bringing the ATF level in the transmission to specification is ONLY required after the last drain-refill. I bought 6 gallons of this ATF:
without doing the 5 steps (which i would do over time) can i do to from 1 to 5?
Absolutely, it's just more work your way because you will need to raise the car level on jack stands and do the leveling procedure for every drain-refill step. I'm lazy, so I took the fast and easy route. Also, my Mini was at 99K miles, and the ATF had never been replaced. I wanted >90% of the ATF in my transmission to be new immediately.
