R56 Replacing motor HPFP question
Replacing motor HPFP question
I am replacing my motor in my 2011 Mini S. I got a used motor with less than 11,000 miles on it. I was moving everything over and noticed that my HPFP is not the same...Is this an issue or can I just move all the lines etc over to the new motor. I have a issue with my old wire harness working on the new motor with the different HPFP...BTW, are there specific injectors that are to be used with each HPFP...Thanks, Ernie
PS, if you are wondering, I allowed Mini to do all my oil changes when the service light came on( shame on me, as I knew from running a turbo car that the oil needs to be replaced at least every 5,000 miles ) My 1st oil change came in just shy of 15,000 miles and the remaining were around 13,000. I called mini twice on my first oil change questioning them about the excessive miles on the oil...They said it was normal...I started using oil around the 60,000 mile mark and it started smoking at 90,000.....I have now replaced the turbo and motor now....

It seems like you could just swap it over. But I don't have experience besides pulling mine for a top end rebuild. As for the correct injectors; can you check and make sure they have the same specifications? Good luck with your project!

what year is the used motor? there are two different pumps!
As far as the N18 motors go, there are two different fuel pumps. The one you had in your original motor is a Continental pump somewhat prone to failure. Later model year N18s has a Bosch fuel pump which is more reliable but also came with a different fuel rail and injectors. For a full motor swap I don't know if the two different versions of the N18 are interchangeable but I can't imagine making it work is too hard.
Guys, thanks for the input....
My old motor 2011 had the Continental HPFP and the new replacement 2012 has the Bosch.
The connector for the Volume control is different between the two. I traced them down to different points on the X60231 plug( plugs into the DME ). Luckily I have both of the wiring harnesses. But when I look at the pin out for the DME there is only one reference pin for the Continental and where the Bosch would land, it is a empty pin.
So I am wondering if I needed the DME that came with the Bosch HPFP or will my original work as well?
Any help is greatly appreciated

Unfortunately your only solution is to change the head to the older style with a continental pump. Your ECU can not drive the Bosch pump as they use different control mechanisms (voltage vs PWM). You also can not swap the pumps as the interface with the intake cam shaft is different and the Bosch has an oil port that the Continental doesn't. But wait there's more... you can't swap the intake cam to the older style because each cam and rocker arm length are set at the factory and the data to change them with the correct geometry is proprietary.
Been down this road before and the only solution is to change out the head as a complete assembly. Sorry I know that's not what you wanted to hear.

Tigger, thanks for the help....Thats what I was afraid of. I am going to return the motor and have them find me one with a continental fuel pump.
BTW, I have a N18 motor that smokes because the rings are shot in the #2+#3 cyl.
Do you think that the head or fuel pump would be worth anything on the used parts board.
Thanks,
