Whats this mounting strip for the Windshield Cowl Cover Kit'

ECS Tuning sells a cowl kit (51132751210KT1) that has a mounting strip and 4 plastic screws for an additional $40 compared to just buying the two cowl halves for $104.

Can anyone tell me where this mounting strip goes and if its really necessary?

That strip sits below the windshield and the cowl sits on top of it to provide a seal.

I don't quite understand where it goes but can i use some liquid sealant? $40 for a strip of foam is silly.

Nevermind, i see where that goes... It's not exposed to the sun so it should be ok to reuse.

Yeah, its more than just a strip of foam, as you have found out. I would pull off the passenger side cowl over the battery (since its easier to remove) and get a look at the condition of your existing strip. My guess would be its fine.

I though it was related to the very edge of the cowl cover where it touches the windshield. There is a thin piece of rubber which has torn away. I wuz wrong.

Thanks Nik I will check it to see if it looks healthy. $40 for a rubber/metal trip is kinda shard to swallow.

If the existing one is not damaged you can reuse it and just put some caulk on it to hold it into place if the old one is falling-off. Make sure you do not re-install the cowl without that as the strip helps it stay in-place.

Yep it just clips to the bottom of the window glass to hold the cowl in place.

If your window has been replaced sometimes the betalink aka rubber sealant they use will spill over and then the seal is hard to clip on, you can take a razor and cut some of the betalink off to help get the seal on.
