Just bought my daughter a mini. R56 I think?

Well, My 16 year old wanted a Mini so being such a great kid in these trying times, I sprung for a 2010 S turbo 2dr HB. I think its the R56? it has 120k and is in really good shape. The previous owner had it for 8 years. I do have limited auto experience but I did get a Mini Code reader. It has went into limp mode once or twice and came out on its on. I'm getting the codes 2885, 2880
and PF22 and I've already read them. I will be doing the HPFP along with oil, air filter and spark plugs this weekend. The plugs, I just want to change since I have no idea when they were last changed. As an addition to these, Ill also install at boost pressure sensor since its relatively easy to do via the location as well as the engine coolant temp sensoralong with the thermostat adapter lead. Maybe this will clear the PF22 even though the cooling fan is not running the entire time and the engine is not overheating.

My biggest worry is the 2885 being a bad turbo but I am going to scout the hoses and connections to make sure that they are all secure and no air is escaping. I will also install a new diverter valve this weekend with everything else. Is there anyone who can suggest how to check the play in the wastegate? I've read that it should be a maximum opening of 8mm? I don't have a vacuum gun. If anyone has any tips or tricks or something special that I need to do or look for please let me know. I'm a GM guy so ill be learning as I go this weekend. lol

Thanks! Glad to get good info on this site so far

Yep, R56. Be prepared, these cars are not cheap to maintain or repair.

Welcome, yes a 2010 S is an R56

Save your money and don't bother with replacing the boost sensor, I've never seen one fail so that likely isn't your issue. You'll need to do some diag, but if you grab the waste gate rod while it's cold and it's loose the turbo is likely your issue as they are known to fail.

I was able to get my hand down in there this morning and feel the waste gate rod. It didnt have any side to side play but it had a tad bit of up and down play. Still hoping its not the Turbo. Thanks again.

Blimey, 16yr old with a 170hp hatchback! How's the insurance? Are you in the US?

Here in the UK I couldn't sell my Cooper S to a new driver because nobody would insure her.

My kid got his licence just before he turned 17 and we went up $1000 a year on the 2 cars, a 2011 MCS and a 2009 Honda Pilot full insurance on both. The MCS took the brunt of increase. We're in Massachusetts, USA. He's getting to like driving Barry the Cooper now and has got pretty good at using a clutch.

cheers

Well I got it all installed. Took it a while to get a decent idle. Scared me for a minute. Ran like crap for about 5-10 min and cleared up. All the codes that was thrown were gone and all stayed away but the 2885 boost pressure plauseabilty Code. It came back as well as the half engine light. It’s strange because it still has killer power even with the half engine light on. Isn’t it supposed to be in limp mode when that light it on? No change in power either way. Back to the drawing board but the other codes are gone. Thanks for the help guys so far

You are an awesome dad. If the turbo fails, go all out and get Stage 3 RPM tune from MarioKart on this forum. Need turbo, intercooler , Downpipe, etc and you'll love it so much that you will keep the MCS for yourself and give the kid some Toyota Yaris!

my kid certainly wants to keep mine.

Give it some time and you'll be asking your daughter to borrow her car to get to wherever you have your boat!
