Some of us are fortunate enough to own some diagnostic software for either personal or professional use. I came across few instances where I want to help other members either don't have the software or the right set up.

So, I would like to know how i can set up my EDIABAS (ISTA, INPA, WINFKP, NCS) to remotely assist other members at a minimum diagnose their Minis!

I am interested in learning about coding gen 2 Minis. I have three in the houshold and two more with inlaws. I do most of the servce. The Memphis Mini is hard to get to Ohio for the more extensive work. Sad because that's the one that needs the most.

what im looking for is how can i access your car through my computer using ISTA.

 

Being in the network field, and a car enthusiast...I do not see a way to make this happen. Using currently hobbyist means.

The only thing that comes to mind is a custom OBD2 plug in, wireless dongle.
Connect it to the local wifi, and find a way to remotely connect your computer, thru the internet, to the OBD device.

 

By remote i meant you're in CA and I'm in PA. Let's say you have the dongle and somehow it is set up to send info through an IP address to an IP address. And i use my program to read write through that connection.

I am assuming that the dongle that you use when running the software on your own car, is USB to OBDII, from a laptop/netbook.
Keeping that in mind, I have a netbook running a VW diag software, that uses a USB to OBDII dongle, to connect to my VW.
I have a few ideas that I will test for remote access to my VW, for scanning only.
If this connection works, I would absolutely never try to program from it!

 

The programming part is maybe for desperate measures. Sometimes I get stuck during the assistance efforts because the remote end user lacks files to even run his own program. transferring them is not an option because of size and speed.

without the diag/programming software being programmed to remotely connect to a device then its impossible.
having been in IT for over 25 yrs there isnt anything out there that isnt already programmed for remote connections that will allow you to see and read another computer/device.
not unless it is Windows Remote Desktop friendly where the OBDII reader is seen as a physical USB device with drivers that can be installed locally or remotely so that when you connect with remote desktop it sees this device and it installs on your server side/client side, so that its like you have it plugged right into their PC. and i doubt its possible.
but i bet someone somewhere has made a remote vehicle diag app.

alternate approach... remote desktop apps like TeamViewer are free and a life saver and is used by many IT companies to remotely repair clients computers. we use a different app at my job. but since Teamviewer is free that would be an option.

but..... you're not going to be using your app through remote desktop, all end user programs i have ever seen are local side only meaning the mini owner would have to have it installed on their PC with an ODB reader and then you remote in and do your thing.
because you are remoting in, your local installation wont work, it wont see the remote OBDII reader and treat it like its plugged in on your side.
the killer being their mini has to have the reader and their laptop, if they have one, has to have the proper software/programmer software installed in order for you to control their vehicle.

now when you get into the BMW/Mini tech side of things it may be possible but for total security reasons i am doubtful BMW ever created a remote diag software that wasnt so closely guarded no one outside of the company has it. and is probably managed by a security dongle that is required to be plugged into the laptop that has the software running on it.
