replace rear fog bulb - bumper comes off?

Hello friends,

My rear fog light bulb is out on my 2013 mini cooper "Justa". This would not be
the worst thing in the world if it was not for the warning light that I get every time I start up the car.

Looking to confirm 2 things. First, the bulb is a P21W 12 volt bulb? Second question is about getting access to that bulb. Am I correct that the rear bumper must be removed to get access to the bulb?

Many thanks,

- Sean

I don't know about the Justa but the 2013 MCS has plastic clips that you squeeze to dislodge the light housing cover - accessed from behind the bumper cover. Just make sure you firmly reseat the clips otherwise it'll leak.

To check the bulb type and replace it, you must access under the bumper and to rotate the bulb holder (it is behind the fog housing) until it is free.
Replace the bulb on the holder then reinsert the holder on the housing and turn it to secure it.

You don't need to remove the bumper nor the fog housing to replace the bulb.

On the R56 LCI Euro is just a T10 halogen bulb.

Thanks - I took 3 screws out of the plastic cover that I am guessing protects the spare tire if you have one (I do not). I can now see into the bumper and I can see the rear fog light and the wires going into it.

I will try and rotate the bulb holder now. Thanks to you both for keeping me from taking the bumper off my car!

Thanks - all done. I know this is not exactly the most exiting fix but the bulb holder was removed by pinching the 4 clips in order to snap it out. The issue was not the bulbs but a corroded center light socket. Water must have gotten in there. I cleaned up the sockets and bulbs and used some dielectric grease. Everything is running now without errors.

Thanks again!

Glad to hear that you were able to solve it easily.

Have a nice day!

I would like to check if the steps above are for the 3 light assembly? (2 X reverse light and 1 X brake light)

Are there any diagrams? I had a tough time figuring out how to remove the assembly for bulb replacement.

Are the circled areas removable?

The triple center light has a reverse light on each end and a fog light in the center. It is clipped to the inside of the bumper. Once out, it unclips in a similar way lengthwise to allow the bulb holder to detach from the bulb lens. The circled protrusions are just the outside view of where the base of the bulbs are located. The three 16Watt, W16W bulbs just pull out and push back in with no twisting.

My lamp assembly wasn’t clipped correctly and filled with water. Now my bulb sockets are corroded.
