Well, you don't say what model and year Mini you're driving, but my first WA guess is that the battery is dead in your key. Usually an exclamation point in the display indicates that something has failed.

Battery in key kaput.
Have a 2nd key ?
If comfort access and 2nd gen, battery is replaceable.

Hmm, does the battery in the key really need to be good to start the car? I thought it was something passive in the key like RFID.

Anyways, had something similar a long time ago, finally dawned on me I wasn't pressing the brake prior to hitting the start button, a Duh moment..

Comfort Access is when you can just touch the door handle and the car will unlock automatically as long as it senses the fob nearby.

Hello,
It happened to me long time ego. The car will start even if the battery is not working, the anti-theft chip does not draw power from the internal battery but is activated by a radio signal sent out by the car. So, you will be able to continue to use/start the car even with a bad battery in the fob.

The only thing is you will have to use the actual key to lock and UN-lock doors, local electronic shop near me replaced for $65.00 charge in one day.
Good luck.
