How does the key battery really recharge?

So how does the battery in the key recharge? Looking at the key, it is a metal shaft with a plastic head (handle). To charge I would expect a positive and negative connection, but there looks like there is only one (the metal shaft). Ideas?
Edit: (I am referring to the 1st gen models, like the 2006)

Nope, it does not use the metal shaft. It works like the electric rechargeable toothbrushes. It's called inductive charging.

Nope, it does not use the metal shaft. It is not rechargable and the battery will need to be replaced eventually.

I agree with JustinGTP...Magnetic Induction.

You don't have to actually put the key in the ignition either...just close.

Try opening your drivers door & place the key near the ignition switch. Your car will start beeping as if you had the key in the ignition...Your car knows when the key gets close enough to start the charge.

Did you even read my post? The batteries in the 05-06 are RECHARGEABLE and as I explained, it is done by inductive charging. Geeze.

On the newer gen1 keys they are inductivly charged....the older gen1 keys do get replacement batterys on a regular basis.
I think the 05'+ have the newer style key.
This "magic" charging has been around for quite a while...I had a panasonic electric razor that sat on a cradle, with 0 metal to metal contacts...my wifes chepo electric toohbrush has inductive charging...and you can get a reciever, transmitter, and adaptor to make cell phones charge the same way....then you just toss you cell on a tray, no plugs, and it charges wirelessly.
As with anything with a battery, it can age, and fail internaly, resulting in the need for a new battery.

Heh.... I just tried this out yesterday; pretty cool. (And, yes, I'm easily amused!)
