Anybody removed the intake muffler on their non-turbo?

Intakes are great, but they're pricey. Looking at the stock intake, I'm wondering if I could get some decent results by removing the stock intake muffler and replacing it with regular piping.

I'm pretty sure there wouldn't be much of a performance improvement, but I think the car might sound a bit better without it. Has anybody done this? Anybody have pictures?

Non-turbo. On the right side of the picture, there's a box in the intake piping that almost looks like a smaller air filter housing. That's an intake muffler. As the name suggests, it's job is to muffle intake sounds. I'd like to hear more such sounds, so I'd like to eliminate it.

Not my car, but it's the best picture of a non-turbo engine bay that I could find.

That's been done many times; I tried it here https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-for-25-a.html. Other folks have used silicon tubing. VIP sells one similar to mine if you're not the DIY type. I don't believe there's any power to be had but you do get a throaty sound from under the hood if that's what you're looking for.

Throaty, yes. Pleasant - no.

I removed my intake muffler thing... and put it back soon after. Running without it gives a boomy and unpleasant sound, especially at highway speeds.

Try removing it and you'll see what I mean. Just don't get rid of it or lose it - - you'll need it when you decide to put it back.

Thanks for the heads up, I won't do anything irreversible.

Any changes to the power profile, either positive or negative? I'm wondering if I might actually lose power without it. It looks very specifically designed.

I didn't notice any power difference, plus or minus. The only thing that changed was the sound.

Try disconnecting it - you might like the change in noise. I like a good intake sound and that's why I tried it. I didn't like it but you might.

Just removing it is not the answer; you still need something to connect you with the cold air intake in the grill. There's also a trick to tape over the holes inside the silencer to get a little more intake noise.https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-silencer.html Do a little search over in Cooper non S mods mods for more info.

Just removing it will give me an idea of the sound change though, that's what he was getting at. After that I'll know whether fabricating a replacement section of piping is worth it for me.

I did search, but by calling it a muffler instead of a silencer I was getting no results.
