So our 2009 N14 has been rattling really loudly when starting and I thought it was the timing chain. I took it to the dealership to have it replaced but they said it was not the timing chain, but it was the wastegate rattling around. It had boost fault codes that show lack of boost pressure and they are saying the wastegate actuator has failed and that is the noise I am hearing. Car has 105,000 miles on it. Chain tensioner was just recently replaced.
Has anyone else had that happen? I will be doing the turbo replacement myself but I just wanted to know if anyone else had a turbo rattle that sounds like a coin in a can that's on a paint mixer...
Yes, I've seen this a few times before. If you need help, we have a turbocharger replacement article on our site that can help you with the replacement. It's under the tech info tab at the top and the last article under the R56 articles. Turbo HERE if needed.

Interesting... But the pump is fine on ours because when you pull the vac line from the waste gate actuator the noise goes away. But now I am curious about how much life is left on the vac pump... Anyone know of symptoms of one that is failing??

Glad they have been helpful to you.
For the vacuum pump, some signs of it failing can be low brake booster vacuum, hard brake pedal, and brake fade during application when stopped. They can also leak oil as well.

Well that is good news because I do not have those problems!
