I I know I can just buy a cai for 200-350 but I have seen people do custom ones where they get piping from autozone/pep boys and connect a cone filter to the end. Can someone shed some light on this as I am a little confused. What do you guys think of this option versus just buying a complete system like a K&N typhoon?
I'm not a friend of the air intake upgrades that takes air from the engine bay (hot air):
For the S model, I only know that type of upgrade (air taken directly from the engine).
In the case of the Base model (my model), you can upgrade to a K&N model (in example) which allows you (through a hose) takes the air from the front grille (fresh and cold air):
All my friends running a S/JCW say that it is just a myth and that there is no difference between where you are taking the air.
It's just my opinion based on my limited knowledge of what kind of air the engine needs/expect for optimal function.
I hope others users can give you the best option for you !
Turbo engines are gonna heat the charge. No way around that besides a bigger more efficient IC and maybe some meth injection. A zip-tube under your hood may make a "better" sound, but will not increase power. I am running the stock airbox and intake, with a Pipercross foam air filter. I like the Pipercross over other drop-ins because it takes less air volume from the airbox, versus say a K&N, which projects further into the airbox. The Pipercross made a bigger "seat-of-the-pants" gain than the K&N did. Plus, it won't oil up your intake and MAF sensor. My opinion only.
Seems like a hydrolock waiting to happen, but probably perfect for track use.
The intake is at the top of the motor so, it would have to be some very very deep water to hydrolock. At that depth, the car would just float away

Hi agordon1337!
There are a number of great solutions available for what you are trying to accomplish. Here is a great deal on the K&N.

Your wasting your money on a bolt on cai unless you have a list of mods your getting ready to do. You can clamp a filter on the end of your MAF if you want to get real hood with it. To each his own.
I kept my stock airbox until the inlet wouldn't fit on a bigger turbo. After I had to do something I decided to go custom. Really the only reason you need to be messing with your intake is if your running into flow or fitment issues with a bigger turbo.
You can definitely go custom it just depends on how weird you want to get with it. I decided to eliminate all that piping and went MAFless. You'll need to speak to a tuner if you want to go this route. The tuner I use seemed think MAFless with shorter piping would reach peak efficiency much gooder n stuff. I'm no expert but I thought hmmm shorter piping is less restricting.
I moved the Rez to the firewall, U need a universal 2.5 foam filter, turbo inlet tube, 2.5 aluminum piping cut to desired length and waapow.
This would be a similar setup as mine moving the coolant Rez except I ran my pcv plumbing into the inlet that came with the turbo...
As has been said many times before - an intake isn't going to get you any more power, so what is your motivation? Noise? Underhood bling? Something different? Preparing for a tune? Or just because you want to? All valid reasons BTW.
The stock filter box comes out easily, see realoem.com or the install guide for any of the aftermarket intakes.
